Thread: ROD OR RIFLE ?

thought it was about time i took the dog out for a walk again. somewhere cool and private but not to far from home. maybe the odd deer about and a small stream where i might be able to have a flick for a trout. i know of just the place, so me and min, after lunch jumped in the old hilux and headed for such a spot. after parking up and a short walk, we found ourselves at the bottom of a steep bush clad ridge standing in a cool clear creek. the stream was well down after the lack of rain but what water was there was, was flowing freely, and it was bloody nice and refreshing to stand in.
It didnt take long to find fresh deer sign, and the side of the creek was crisscrossed with footprints which is always encouraging. But the water looked good and the pools clear, and i thought there must be a few trout around. so i quickly put together my rod, and started fishing. first cast i was hit, and played it for a couple of minutes but my knot on my lure failed and the fish made for the deep rock ledge in the pool taking my ten dollar lure with it. i spent most of the afternoon fishing the pools, and sniffing around for a handy deer. never had much luck today with the deer but i ended up getting a nice rainbow out of one of the pools, and spent half an hour playing with a huge eel that could have bitten your hand off if it had wanted. it was a outstanding afternoon and the dog had a ball. got back to the ute at about 19.45. enjoyed the drive home as it was a stunning evening.
