Yeah, I very nearly screwed the pooch there.
What didn't really come across in the ep was the fact that under normal circumstances, Anto would communicate better with me beforehand as to where to set up my tripod and camera, and exactly how things would play out in his head. Because he knew this Cham was a potential trophy of a lifetime, I think his nerves made him rush things, and forget to go through the normal protocols.
To be perfectly honest, I had no idea the buck was the size he was (I don't monitor audio on the hill so was unaware of many of the discussions between Sam and Anto) so figured this might be another case of the guys thinking a buck's a monster when it's only 9.5 inches, which has happened on a couple of occasions in the past. It wasn't till Anto pulled it out of the scrub and I saw the horns that I realised the gravity of the situation.
It would have been nice to have framed the shot perfectly and had a slow motion impact shot through the shoulder, but the way it played out on screen certainly added a bit of extra drama to the sequence!
Cameraman Dave

Excellent big country cinematography, and a superb buck trophy makes for great viewing!
Aye, no worries Dave - it was like deja vu for me hunting a big red stag right on dark last couple of mins of shooting light on the bush edge where it breaks out to tussock. We’d spotted this big boy the night before but from 5-600 yards away. He stayed in the windfall and bush edge up till dark & never presented a shot, but we saw enough to know he was a big 12 or 14 with 4 big tops on each side. He had two younger stags nearby probably his offspring judging by the heads. So went back next evening to a closer shooting possie and waited for him to show. One of the younger stags popped out about an hour before dark but the big boy stayed in the bush. Lots of roaring action going on in bush, clearly having words with some one else chasing his girls. We waited & waited. Last couple of mins of shootable light we hear him roar just inside the bush edge, then he ghosts out of the windfall standing looking our way. Well at least that was what my son could see, me I couldn’t see him for live of money. I’m getting the message “what are you waiting for, shoot !!” Then I found him in the scope, right where I’d been looking and where he’d been all along. Boomfa, stag down.
So I can feel for your frustration with the chamois hiding in plain sight. LOL
bloody good watch. great to see some realistic hunters on TV - get sick of watching idiots - why is it that so many hunters on TV programs persist in carrying deer out with the the bloody head on -cant make that senseless bullshit out at all -cut it of save carrying out extra 5kg - I cut mine of close to shoulders -stag good head okay but a hind or doe senseless -my rant for day -I feel better
Hands down the best hunting show on TV. !
Loved it and the fact you almost messed it up, made for better TV. Can't wait for next weeks episode already.
Great show, well done. Thats a cool piece of familiar country, haven't been in there for many a year, but have been promising myself I'm heading back in some time soon. And Im glad you missed the shot Dave, I see no need to slo mo a kill shot, its the story we want, not the kill shot. And you guys seem to capture the story every time.
I would love to know how old that Cham was.
Does anyone know???
Fantastic animal, great show
