    Ruahines

Would like to take 2 new hunters in to the ruahines this coming weekend it's a place I wana start hunting , with no luck I'm giving up on the sika for a while.
Thinking of staying at Longview hut this a good place to start? Is there a better starting point?

Good place two start, hut is often very busy on some weekends. Lots of animals in there at the moment, we have shot a lot from the track, @338 keeps shooting my pet ones
Good hunting down into the gully heads two the north of the hut.

I recall that very early on in your forum and hunting life you got a couple down there with your first Sako. Yeah?
Still got the pic to post?

Yeah that's right. They were the first reds I shot in the ruahines when I moved back to Hawkes bay. I do have that pic somewhere. KK and myself did a few trips in that area. 04-05 seems an age ago now

Giving up on Sika for a while? I don't hunt them any different to reds. Admittedly, I mostly hunt the tops, my method is to get above and look back down to the bush/scrub edge, and when you think that there is nothing, look again!

I wouldn’t go too high at this time of the year. The wind can be an arse around Longview so pick your weather. Either hunt down the creek as Nathan says, or head along the ridge into the watershed going the other way as Brad says. Nth/East I guess it is. If you head up hill through the saddle towards the tussock there is no need to go right to the top. You can sidle along the leatherwood belt (in out, under it, or above it) after not too much of a climb. Turn Nth East (on your right) going up the main spur when you hit the scattered leatherwood and hunt the gully heads.

You will work it all out when you get there and see it. Take your time and use your binos a lot. You will see more deer looking down than you will looking up. You can access it all from the hut.

That’s it Nathan. Neat memories, eh.

Petree, I’ve been thinking. You are going to have to think through what you are doing wrong in the Kaweka’s. Shifting location and/or species is unlikely to make any great difference unless you figure things out.

    Cheers
