There’s a few in the north too. Like he says, make sure you shoot a few. They need culling.

Yup that whole range all the way through Mangaweka and Hikurangi is crawling. Was further North in December and saw 20+ in the few weather windows we got (was in for 7 days and probably got 1.5 days out of the cloud). Shot a few but would have shot a lot more if we got the weather to go chasing them with a bit more earnest.
Possibly heading back in to a similar area September to a lower altitude in one of the valleys, assume I'll have good success hunting the north facing slips and upper head-water feed-belts even that time of year. Deer might be a bit skinny though, although in December the deer we shot were in quite good nick.
How low is the snow on the Hills behind Mangaweka at the moment? i'm guessing theirs a bit around now yeah? are hoping to head that way end of month if not flooded and frozen over... thanking you in advance for any reports, cheers.
@wsm junkie Thank you for the report mate!
Looking from the Takapau plains yesterday morning there was a good coating of snow on the Ruahines!!
