Thread: Ruahines & Tararuas trips

Hey guys.

If anyone is keen for a hunting mate to go for a walk let me know. I have a few known spots in the Tararuas around the Levin area that I go to. I would like to go with a mate as it’s a bit safer and less boring.

I’m looking to extend my area up into the Ruahines in the Ashhurst and Woodville area although I wouldn’t be much help with hunting locations there. I have been up once a few years back though.

I’m pretty easy going and enjoy getting out as much as possible. Especially during the week when’s there’s less people on the hills.

Send me a message if your keen. I’m definitely not a hunting guru, just keen to get out a lot.

for real bro, taking a week or so at xmas for an explore and a bit of living on the road thing, was thinking of heading south/ west of here but a bit of NI could be good too, if i ever make up my mind ill hit you up. let me know if your ever down here we have a spare room a good truck and are about an hour from the closest spot so pretty sweet.

Id be keen for a trip into the Tararuas bro. Ive never been down those ways. Also pretty new to the hunting scene ive knocked over a few fallow but no reds. Let me know if youre keen and we will tee it up. Cheers bro

Oh yeah bro anytime ay. I actually seen your post about knocking over your first deer it was a mean read! Tararuas I have found to be pretty rough. Definately learnt not to mess with the supple jack that stuff is impossible!

Heading out for a couple evening walks over the next few days in the southern Ruahines if anyone’s keen. Casual stuff.. bush stalking I don’t do tops stuff at the moment

@stuart You are going to a good spot. Not sure how well you know the area, but if you do the loop around to the hut and down you walk past a lot of deer and across a lot of dead country. I never go further than the tarns. Take your time going up and start glassing as soon as you can see into either of the creeks each side of the track. When you get to the tarns spend some time looking into the big gully (I call it venison gully) that drains down into the Orua. Its more productive to footle around south of the tarns down toward's Jim's Saddle than it is to hump around to the hut. Look down the little ridges both to the East and West. You can hunt to dark, and then pick up the track and iron standards and go back to the car the way you came. Maybe that might help. Or you might already have your own successful way of doing it.

I’ve only been up there once with the Mrs https://youtu.be/axjgpa3HRJo we saw sign but no animals, so was planning on going past the hut and going around too the left and camping somewhere along the top this time, where’s Jim’s saddle?

OK. You said that you were doing the Deadman's loop. Where you are planning on going is fine. PM me about that area if you want. Jim's saddle is at the top of Deadman's track heading south.
Jim was a hunter who many years ago (about 60 years) burnt the saddle out when his white spirits stove burst into flames. He first took me into the area 50 years ago. Have hunted it ever since and cut a few tracks in there with mates that are still used now.

Will do, pretty new too the area so I’ll glady take any info that’s shared
