    Safe place for a safe

Hopefully going to get a new safe tomorrow, yet limited on space for it. So thinking about the roof space but worried about heat, even with no ammo stored in it, does heat/how hot does it have to be to run the risk of damaging rifles? Or no risk at all?

The roof space would get to around 50° if not hotter in the peak of summer

The roof space is best avoided for both heat and ease of access. The back corner of a built-in wardrobe is probably the best place with a couple of long coats hung in front of it. Being out of sight during a quick search is what you are aiming for.

Wooden stocked rifles might dry out and warp in the short term or split in the long term, the rubbery synthetic stocks (like Howas) won't like it as much either and might go tacky.

Would be a hassle to get firearms in and out of there too.

Someone else might like to weigh in here, but I can't see that it would be wrong to put a standard gunsafe on its side, as long as it is still fixed to floor and wall. You might be able to fit it under a bed.

Thank you for that, wooden stock was my concern. Acces, not so much as it will be my ones a I don't use often, but they will all be wooden stock and may not come out for a year

Mate in Auckland fixed his inside daughter’s wardrobe before building a false ‘push in’ painted ply wall in front.

I've seen another option where the guy fitted the safe lying down under the off side of his bed. Was securely fixed to the floor, and surrounded by one of those beds with sides and drawers. The safe was completely hidden by the drawers and the only access was through the top by taking the mattress off. Definite no to in the ceiling!

From before safes became compulsory, had a mate who went to Aussie for a year, stored his firearms in the roof space, barrels well lubed, over summer the protection melted and sat in bottom side of barrel, over next winter condensation dealt to the unprotected top half of barrel, all required the services or Steve Blencarne who was then "Tru-flite" barrels.

not in the roofspace . too cold and too hot.
on a similar note never let someone install the alarm panel in the roofspace! (then people wonder why the battery lasts a year and all the false alarms etc)

Echo that nothing wrong with safe lying on side, still fixed to floor and wall, and would pass inspection if worried about that too
