    Sambar

Excuse my ignorance on the north island in general but do Sambar have any known public land range or are they only forestry and private land ?

Mostly private and forestry blocks. In the Manawatu there are 3 DOC blocks that you can ballot for...Roundbush, Moutua Swamp & Tawhirihoe Scenic reserve. They are small blocks, heavily hunted but they do hold a lot of animals. I live about 20min from these blocks. The other place to find them on public land is around the lakes around Rotorua. Oh yeah by the way hi everyone. First post but I've been watching for a while.

iv hunted them in the motua block before, when i went there they ballot the permits at the start of every month i dont know if its still the same now cus that was a few years back, iv also hunted the santoft blocks, lots of animals in in both areas. they are sneaky little bastards but i managed to bag myself one in motua and spotted a hind in santoft but didnt get a shot.

I've hunted both the Manawatu/Horowhenua herds and the BOP one, also hunted them in Aussie. As you have probably been told, there is limited public access to them, best odds are in the balloted blocks in the Horowhenua areas. Failing that ask around, the best Sambar action happens on private land in NZ. Some nice stags coming out of the lower naki in the past few years hint hint
