If you were asked by a newbie What rifle what caliber for owning one accurate rifle does all from say 30 to 140 mtr red deer and what scope . What would be your recipe for success ? Consider you do not wish to be chasing runners ?
Keep in mind the range which is reasonably acheiveable as I believe personably I have not found the required combo yet
Get a Howa package off trademe, brand new .308 with scope that will get you going and is a great all rounder,

Howa good scope bad. Get the howa and a burris fullfeild vx1 bushy elite 3200 3-9 cheapest decent options. 308s a good choice for what you wanted

Howa is great, just up the calibre to .375 ruger, you won't have to chase any runners then!
bro use the search on that shit first....heaps of info floating about. gutshot a deer with a .50 cal and itll probably run. shot placement is key with any calibre gun... 270, 7mm08, 308
Happy the real point that you should be considering when you purchase a rifle is how you feel about it. Personal factors like whether it comes up well to your eye and the balance feels right are far more important in my opinion than the make, calibre and scope. Even if you found a no name rifle in a mid range calibre with a crap scope that fitted you really well, it would clean kill deer at the ranges you are talking about. None of us have exactly the same preferences and buying a rifle (much like buying a car) comes down to a lot more about budget and personal "wow" factors

Get that question a few times each week at the shop.
308 7/08 270 are the three biggest selling cals in NZ in sporting deer rifles and any one of them will do the job just fine .
The Howas are a great deal and any local gunshop can get them however the scope and rings are a bit on the average side and could do with upgrading sooner or later .The howas are also a bit on the weighty side.
Best thing is to head to a few shops and get hands on with a few rifles .Tikka Remmington Marlin Ruger all make fine rifles but they are all a little different in fit and feel which is very important .
Optic wise the bushnell 6500 3x9x40 at $500ish is a bloody good scope match that with a set of good rings and your done.
Im hoping to get my first gun in January. Looking at a Tikka .308. With a Bushnell scope.

Another option 444 Marlin mine is sighted dead on at 170yds and at that range will group at 1.5" every day.Fitted with a Redfield 2-7x scope .The Hornady 265 gr FP at 2325fps for 3181flbs energy really really puts them down BANG FLOP and not much meat damage,and quick for that follow up shot at the next one when surrounded by piggys or goats.
