He musta been using Chanel's Eau d'SowF@nny
I started out with scent control and UV killers. Never got anywhere then eventually started hunting smarter after getting a few lessons from an experienced hunter.
Not everyone is fortunate to have a father etc who can show you the ropes from an early age.
You are doing the right thing resulting in close encounters so only a matter of time. Someone taking you under their wing will help refine what you have been reading. But it doesn't stop when you pull the trigger. Learning how to butcher and look after the meat is just as important as is tracking a wounded deer you are morally responsible for ending its misery
You are almost there. Take up some of the offers and go to the next level
Sorry mate I wasn't meaning to belittle you.
I should have put more thought into reply .
Listen what I was meaning is don't put so much time into getting rid of your scent if u are going to be stalking.
While walking you are going to sweat.
If you sweat you stink no matter what you wear or put on to mask it.
The Yanks sell lots of this junk but if you look into it while a lot of guys do bush hunt there is a big number that sit up in tree stands or blinds all day and there may be hunters dotted around in same area in large numbers and they will cover themselves with all sorts of crap.
For sure don't put your fav body spray on before hunting and don't go walking thru your prime spots and leave scent everywhere.
Try to get to know a area that has deer sign .
sometimes you have to pull up when seeing a deer or a heap of sign and make a plan to come back when wind is right, right time of day or come at it from a different direction to get a better look in from afar.
Study topo map of area.
Thanks
I was out a couple of days ago walked through some clearings for a quick look as I intended to head else where but decided the wind was no good so walked through the clearings again to a bit of a vantage point & waited glassing other areas to my surprise 2 walked out on the clearing I had walked through twice...they didn't get quite so far as to get to the ground I actually walked over but they were only 30 meters from that I watched them for a while as they got closer to where I had walked to see if they reacted , in the end I decided if walked 50 meters closer & they were silly enough to still be standing there I would shoot 1 that I took to be a yearling ...I got got 5 meters :) gone.
Hey guys ..I still consider myself a newbie in the hunting realm ..my discipline is bowhunting and I have only smashed over goats [emoji238] so far as you guys would understand we have to be 60m or closer ..in saying that I use these products to help give me an advantage and they have convinced me that there is merit to them ..I hunt the traditional way of having the wind in my face but also understand that wind can change in an instance ..the reason I am a believer that these products do manage the odour better is a brother and I went for a hunt down wanganui where they have pigs, goats and fallow deer ..I was given inside info on a spot to check out which was a 2 hour hike to get there so I had a reasonable sweat up ..spotted 2 fallow hinds 200m away had perfect cover to stalk up to 60m away and even with the wind coming from behjnd me They were not alerted to my presence..i tried to make my way around a knob to at least get me another 10 metres closer and was busted by a 3rd hind that saw my movement coming around the knob (unreal alertness) ..because of my inexperience I should have remain still until the deer was comfortable it was reacting to nothing ..but my stupid ass bobbed back Down and waited for a few minutes before i slowly popped my head back up with a little sparse bush in front of me ..and it was still looking in my direction gave a bark took off alerted 11 other hinds that I didn't see that were obscured by a small hill that were all feeding with out being alerted to me being there, they were 50m away ..there is also a couple other occasions the wind has not been in my favour and had similar results (Kaimai ranges -I'm from Matamata) ...I was gutted when I seen 14 hinds Break back to the bush in Wanganui [emoji17]

One other occasion I was walking up the back of a farm (Kaimai ranges - West side) in a gully had finger of bush with a small stream running through it that hadn't been clear felled for farming so was part of the native ..had my bow strapped to the back of my day pack walking up the race getting to the spot I wanted to check out ..walking up the race with the stream on my left getting to the top of the rise with a 3 metre bank to my right ..the race flattened out somewhat and diverted also to the right ..I clear the bank and boom a red deer hind 80m away feeding on the grass ..I pull back to be out of the deers vision headed to the gully side where a biggish patch of grass was and take off my pack unstrap my bow nocked an arrow snuck around a little to have a look to see if the red deer hind was still there but nothing "shit" so I ranged the bush it was next to 80m it read so even though the wind wasn't in my favour I made my way back on the race stalking ever so slowly and kept ranging that particular bush until I got within 49m then it's head appeared through some really long grass head down feeding 5m to my left of the bush I was ranging drew my bow and waited for it to turn broadside to give me my shot ..no sooner as it turned broadside it spotted me and boom into the native, down the gully and gone ..just 2 more seconds is all I needed to have my shot but not to be and this was all with the wind behind my back

So it didn't work at all
That's a pretty sceptical reply, how on gods green earth do you know what your smell was doing in relation to the deer's snout? Fill ya boots mate but don't be surprised when some of us call bullshit. Not on you personally but on scent control gimmicks in general.
Lol ..hey that's fine each is allowed their own opinion doesn't effect my position at the end of the day it's what makes life that bit more interesting each of us having our say ..but I know that it has its benefits ..[emoji1476]

Often the wind can be behind you but be being blown above the animals by a ridge or eddying around and not getting there at all.
Nothing is ever as it seems with wind in the hills.

Awesome cheers for the reply but I know how far I have stalked in because I have to ..could be right could be wrong but when you are at the same level as the animal and only 50m high chance that is going to make it to the deers nose ..I'm loving this [emoji1417]

When I get home I will post up pics of what I use ..cool thing for me is that we have come along way in technology in everything we do ..I bet these guys are driving around in modern cars with modern gadgets (rifles boots binos etc) if they are so old school then why have latest technology if you believe old way is best ...we are in an age of convenience and more efficient ways of doing things ..don't get me wrong I play the wind in my favour as much as I can because I hunt with a bow ..no dog to track for me (I could but it takes away from my learning skills of tracking) ..it's what's makes us all unique..hunters come in many shapes and sizes so one size doesn't fit all ..

I realise that ..the MASSIVE difference a rifle has the ability to drop an animal at a 100m and beyond because of a scope ..because a bow is not scoped out like a rifle and we have a peep and pins (compound bow) we HAVE to be with in 60m unless you a crack shot like "Tim Wells" who's nailing targets out to 110m no peep no pins and this guy is nailing prairie dogs that is unreal shooting ..shooting a bow compared to a rifle goes like this 10m with a bow is the equivalent to a scoped rifle at a 100m ..if you even want to come a shoot a bow and see what it's like I have an archery workshop set up in my garage with the rugby fields across the road so I can practice long range ...keep it coming boys this is beautiful [emoji41]

Wow I sense a bit of heavy energy in that reply ..but it means bugger all to me just illustrates you butt hurting ..why do you hate because someone chooses to hunt a specific way ..your opinion is your opinion mine is mine ..does it serve well when the common ground is hunting ..I bet the car you drive is different to the one I drive ..both are a means of transporting us somewhere a lot quicker than walking ..once again cheers for the reply Gibo

Northern key aspect is how used to human smells they are, go hunting in one place where they are on a mates lawn, he can go put washing out and they don't get fussed
Hmmm. This thread seems to have a bit of a downturn, I'm out.....
Calling people a 'champ' shows how much you really value the opinions of others. You seem to be up on some sort of pedestal? Have fun up there :D
Well I feel it's more respectful than calling them a prick or a wanker ..which I fell on this thread there is no need ..it's a place of sharing ones opinions good bad or ugly ..I don't bow to no one don't intend to ..people ain't coming forth to pay my bills and wipe my butt after a crap and yet when the replies towards me a phark you in a nice way at least I have the decency to accept their opinion but no one is happy about mine ..pedestal nice one a round about way of saying "phark you prick" ..just because you feel you hunt the way you hunt I respect that each to their own ..slowelliot asked for opinions I gave mine and most are pissed with it ..life is too short to hate we have a tendency to focus on the wrong things me included in other areas of my life in which I endeavour to work on ..

The real assholes are those that are trying to kill off the pastime of hunting with 1080 ..that to me is a topic I'm sure we can all agree with ..reading in a magazine of NZ hunter the editor writes about 20,000 deer killed in 12 months by way of 1080 and everyone is up in arms about my opinion ..come on guys

Love how passionate you guys are, but let's try and keep it friendly. 😉
I think this thread has about ran it's course anyway.
Cheers.
Their is a whole buttload of text taken out of context here.....
@Kiwininja if you hang around a while and get to know the posters here you will see you have taken posts compleatly out of context and then reacted badly.
Its a good bunch of guys/gals here all helping each other out :)
No it didn't work they smelt you.
Wind shifts around sometimes you get lucky.
you can rub yourself down in any type of hyped up crap with a hefty price tag but as soon as you start moving you sweat and you stink like a human.
Our nose,s can pick up smells well you can only imagine what animals can pick up.
Just FYI. Sweat itself doesn't smell, its the bacteria.
Bacteria can be killed.
On the money ..nothing to do with sweat it's the bacteria that gives the pungent aroma ..definitely make sure I consume a lot of water the night before I head out and absolutely make sure I don't eat crap to ensure my body doesn't sweat out toxins to encourage bacteria ..all in the preparation more than the hunt itself for me ..

TBH ..I always take celery sticks in a air tight bag that I can pump seal (zip lok make them put a pic of it if need be) celery is a natural neutraliser for the breath

From 15y old to 38y old I chain smoked parkdrive tobacco at around 10 grams a day or two 30 gram packs every 6 days, rolling "racehorses" with no filters this pretty much meant that if I was awake there was a durry hanging out of my mouth, Up until I turned 30 when I upgraded the arsenal 100y would have been a long long shot, 90% of deer, pig and goat was shot at 10-40y cos you cant see further than that in most bush.
Have even been within less than 2m of a feeding hind with the wind going in her direction with a lit durry in my mouth, she only spooked when I lept at her to try and slap her on the arse....my finger tips just brushed the hair on her rump.
If I had committed to the jump I probably could have bulldogged her but having grown up on a deer farm I know how those hooves can cut you up....I just wanted to be able to say I got close enough to slap a wild deer on the arse...not quite but fucken close!
Understanding wind currents is a far more helpfull skill than trying to cover your scent in my opinion or I would never have shot anything.

This is my "zip vac" bags sorry ..the smallest one I usually put frozen mixed veggies then pump out the air throw it in the freezer grab it and pack it somewhere not internally then when I cook me a feed (2 nights has been my max) input some in with whatever I'm cooking up reseal and pump out air and store again ..the bag retains the water in there ..I don't take a massive amount enough for two meals and that's me ..
