    Seeking Hunting Mentor

Hi again guys, with the roar starting to get underway, I am by no means asking anyone to take me under there wing over the next couple of months. What i am asking though is after this period has settled down, is there anyone out there in the Wellington/Kapiti region that would be interested in teaching me the finer details of deer hunting and bush craft?

I have only been hunting a couple of years down Christchurch area but have just moved north for work. The hunting that I was doing wasn't stalking as such on private land (was governed to hunt the way the people i were with i.e mostly spotlighting.) which got me meat but I don't feel that i really learned anything to help become a true deer stalker. Had 2 Thar hunts up the Rangitata river with minor success and extremely enjoyed every minute of it!

Im 32 yrs old so a late starter to this but just as eager as anyone younger, have all my own gear to be able to fly camp for a day or 2.

To prove my character to anyone willing I am more than prepared to go on a few hunts without my rifle just to be apart of the experience and prove im a safe hunter and can be trusted. Im not looking for peoples spots more their knowledge. I have thought about joining NZDS but unshore for some reason.

Long story short, I am eager to lean from experienced hunters to help me become one myself and am willing to put in the hard yards and time to achieve this. If anyone is interested pm me and I will be shore to reply.

Cheers to anyone that reads this or can give me any advice.

I would join the NZDA. Always a good place to meet people and learn tips etc from going to the meetings. Hopefully someone will take you under their wing but going out in the bush and doing some trips you be surprised what you learn yourself over time . If you read up on the basics on deer stalking the bush and get out there it take some time but you get there in the end as thats what i did and im doing great now.

Join the hutt valley nzda and get your self on their local hunter training course. You'll get to meet a dozen or so other people all in the same situation as you. They also have a rifle range for member use too which is handy

Its not uncommon to team up with a more experienced hunter so your idea is a good one. Quite a few are keen to pas on whatevrr they ve learnt themselves. The best place to meet is face to face via mutual frein,ds or at a club trip.

I shot my first deer on a bushcraft course with the upper hutt branch under the expert guidance of Robin Blake. I still see qiite a few of those guys around on the rifle range sevrral decades later. Anothrr idea is to join a tramping club like hvtc or ttc. There are usually a few hunters there. Also you ll get a good grounding in bushcraft there ( dare I say it- more so than with straiht out hunters) and see a lot of great country that you can later choose from for hunting trips.

Dont worry that experience spotlighting will disqualify you from joining the NZDA. Its perfectly l
Legitimate on private land. Just grovelly hard work and who would bother except to fill the freezer ?

Since your identity is just new on the forum you could change your username to something more wholesome like "oleria" "greywacke" "karearea" etc. Have a look through the alphabetical list in this site to get an idea ir good and cringeworthy handles.

    Where are you based?
I went to my first NZDA meeting last month out here in Kapiti and I'll be going back next month and joining. They seem like a decent crew of guys.

Didn't mean to cast aspersions on a long standing nickname.
The great thing about the forum is you start from scratch and a lot of people separate their day to day from their online so you can just tell your old mates who your are on the forum but lots don't. You never know who you're talking to ...

Join mate, its well worth it for the liability insurance cover, usually they have a range you can use and a lot of other benefits however I have yet to go to a meeting even though I have been a member for couple of years
