Its not uncommon to team up with a more experienced hunter so your idea is a good one. Quite a few are keen to pas on whatevrr they ve learnt themselves. The best place to meet is face to face via mutual frein,ds or at a club trip.
I shot my first deer on a bushcraft course with the upper hutt branch under the expert guidance of Robin Blake. I still see qiite a few of those guys around on the rifle range sevrral decades later. Anothrr idea is to join a tramping club like hvtc or ttc. There are usually a few hunters there. Also you ll get a good grounding in bushcraft there ( dare I say it- more so than with straiht out hunters) and see a lot of great country that you can later choose from for hunting trips.
Dont worry that experience spotlighting will disqualify you from joining the NZDA. Its perfectly l
