That is a bloody hard one eh! You have to feel sorry for both parties (well I do anyway).
Solid reminder to us all however!
At 67 with a cataract in my right eye I would still remember a deer is not going to hang near a dog.
"He took significant time with glasses on and off, scope at wide and close magnification, roaring at the target and seeing how the dog was reacting - this shows a degree of care that was insufficient but reduces the carelessness."
Maybe I got it wrong.
Real guns start with the number 3 or bigger and make two holes, one in and one out
If the day comes that I am roaring at and watching a dog at 42m and think its a deer someone put me out of my misery.

"Hunting and fishing" fucking over licenced firearms owners since ages ago.
308Win One chambering to rule them all.
Na no excuses throw away the key. If you're too old and your eyesight is too shit to be hunting then you shouldn't be hunting and the very fact that you are proves you're reckless and have no regard for other users of the outdoors.
Personally, I think 6 months is a joke. Bad eyesight, no hunting permit and shooting near the track...
are the rules no hunting within 500mtrs of any track ?
OPCz
If in doubt double tap
My latest DOC permit says:
No firearm shall be discharged:
• In the vicinity of huts, tracks, campsites, road-ends or other public places.
• Within 500m of a Great Walk Hut or track.
• In a manner that endangers, frightens or annoys members of the public.
• In a manner that endangers any property.
Also, DOC signage at a few of my hunting spots says "Keep to the tracks" (due to Kauri die-back).
So... Hunting is allowed, but keep to the tracks, and don't discharge a firearm in the vicinity of a track. Good one.
Un fucking believable !!! 6 months is a joke.

It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms
I can see how this would happen with buckfevwr and a rushed shoot,
At 42 meters takeing your time roaring at a person just sitting there eating his lunch wtf this guy must be blind as a bat give him an eye test and then charge him with murder
If someone has any eye concerns they should be tested at the optomitrist before aloud to shoot,
If Mc Currach took all the time looking at his potential target that he states, then his eyesight must be so bad I'm surprised he managed to get where he was.
"Positively identify your target",there's been a few failures with this rule over the years.
Sure the guy has gone through some angst since the incident but 6 months prison is pretty light for taking a human life.
