Shoot or Not to shoot..that is the questtion

Just wanting to know you thoughts.....when you see a stag in a private block that you have. Hard antler and nice head.....do you wait for the roar to start before you shoot him or smoke him on the spot?
The thrill of him answering your roar, the one you practiced so much that the Mrs is so sick of hearing the noise she has forbidden you to do it inside.... and watching as he slowly makes his way through the bush and catching it all on camera??

    What would you do?

If it is in hard antler and as big as it is likely to get, I would tip it up whenever I seen it.
Especially in the South Island as stags can move a long way over the next few weeks.
No guarantees he will be where you last seen him come the rut.

I'd drop him and focus on having some practice with the younger stags over the roar. But if your confident in bumping into him again in the roar then by all means let him walk. He may not like seeing you in his patch and vacate the area as R93 has said.

Why bother taking a rifle if you are only going for a look?

Depends on your block I guess, If said block is big enough and has a decent resident population of hinds that you see on any given day then odds on you will see him in the roar, If its only a small block and neighbors have good deer country too(with deer) you may not see him again before he is shot or leaves the area.
Then again he may stay there

If I were you id forget him and shoot a yearling or hind, they taste the best
