These guys are a good watch as they hunt through their weeks vacation at a South African farm. Day two contains most of their ballistic info and they chat a bit about their Tikka.
Put your feet up and relax while they pull of some great long range shots on monkeys, they have a good handle of the effects of wind and are easy to listen to.

I liked the one of shooting dassies with the PCP, being a PCP owner.
Amuses me them walking round in jandals amongst serious thorns and possibly snakes. Mind you, in 40 degrees I can understand why
That was interesting, but not sure I could shoot one of them. Not really my cup of tea.
Maybe because they are a bit human like? But I understand that they need to be controlled.

Is it just me or do other people find this sort of thing a bit sick. Hey we shoot heaps of stuff here, all introduced and all of it pests. I have no problem with that. But going out and shooting animals which to me look to be in great condition not skinny or diseased because there is a drought. Yeah nah. You can justify it to yourself but you wont convince me. Unfortunately the internet is full of blokes making themselves look big by killing stuff.
Baboons are a pest. They explicitly stated this in the beginning of the video.
When animals that can literally survive (thrive) anywhere have their natural predators removed their numbers explode and need to be controlled somehow.Quote:

Other examples are vervet monkeys, bush pigs, porcupines, all thrive in farm/suburban environments and are extremely destructive to crops and people's livelihoods, remember a lot of farming there is subsistence and people's only good source. Predators are long gone, numbers must be controlled.
When we start telling people what they can and can't shoot just because we don't like it we become no better than vegan animal activists or anti hunters. As long as its legal and sustainable then its all good.

It's the same as it is here with possums and cats, the same as it is everywhere; they don't shoot them out of kindness because they are suffering, but because the healthy ones are damaging farmland/stock/pets/people/ecosystem/endangered animalsQuote:

There is though an element here in NZ that will shoot anything with blood in it, and justify it by calling them "pests". And some of them are indeed pests, but often not in the context or environment that they get shot in. I'm thinking of things like harrier hawks, gulls, pukekos...even spur wing plovers. Hares are a favourite animal of mine, and in some areas quite rare. In these areas, why would you want to shoot one just for the sake of it - when its not actually behaving like a pest.?

Baboons will destroy gardens and a large percentage of Africa still live on what they grow.
they are bloody deadly if cornered and I can tell you that from personal experience as I surprized one in change rooms one morning.
Why don't all the starving Africa kids eat baboons?

Baboons are very intelligent! They can tell the difference between men women and kids. They also know when your armed, even if you pick up a rock! There are plenty of reports of a them killing kids and women. Yes they may look similar to us but there eyes to me are malicious. Now if you look into a Chimpanzee our Gorillas eyes you don't seem to get that even in the wild!
I'd shoot baboons with out a second thought now! But I'd don't think I would have even considered doing it before spending time in Africa!
Like some of the guys say wait till you meet one!

I did a tour through some of Africa many years ago as part of my OE. The baboons were the scariest animal I encountered. Sitting next to the track baring their big teeth at you as you walked by, evil looking bastards & fast! Only other time I was worried was going to the toilet late at night after eating something dodgy, spooked a big porcupine in the bushes, he took off & it was all I could do not to shit myself.
watched his videos when getting into airguns I shoot my fx almost exclusively on small game now

Hey Hutch did you go on an overland expedition our back pack it?
Overland on a truck, Kenya to Zimbabwe, cooking on fires and sleeping in tents in the bush or by the road, or what passed for roads. Great experience. Met 2 kiwi girls back packing. They didn't have too many problems except it always took longer to get anywhere. Even met a dutch girl on her push bike. We considered riding motorbikes but that didn't work out. Met some guys who were, their biggest problem was guarding the bikes 24/7 and they weren't allowed to ride though some of the parks.

I think it was Acacia, they were a bit budget but not bad. Big old yellow DAF truck. The driver was a Pom who had lost his own truck (& shirt) in North Africa when they got caught up in a civil war & had to abandon the truck & fly everyone home. We also had a guide but all he wanted to do was get to the next bar. This was in 1991.
