12 inch,just the pistol grip , 30 yards.
yip everyone who hunts the pines has to do so....barrel length doesnt matter so much but shorter =louder both for you and the dogs...really short = really loud and will develop a flinch really quickly
accuracy and potentcy /power....25 yards good..50 yards hopeful 75 yards with work 100 yards with lots of work and load developement
bailed pigs are shot at 5-15 yards
rifles barrel and saboted slugs can give you better than that but again..it will take load development and lots of experimentation to find what works unless you were particularly nice to little old ladies in previous life and hit jack pot straight off.
Used a chopped 20 gauge for years, added open sights, was good for 40 meters with slugs but always got in close for bail ups, seldom used over 10 meters. Would have kept it but DOC started enforcing no shotguns in our estate.
Depends what ammo you plan to use...slugs or buckshot.

Short 15inch baikal single shot 12g. Have a couple of old baikals marked ussr absolute work horses. Slugs are a tad nasty but cut shells are better

410 with solids works well
Can you not use a cast lead bullet in a 308 a nice big 180-200grn with trailboss or something similar
Noob question: at close range wouldn't any rifle do, if not for a kill, at least a stun before sticking?
Identify your target beyond all doubt because you never miss (right?) and I'll be missed.
yes and no..... if you cant reach brain or spine..pig can be very much still alive and VERY pissed off and can hurt you or dogs before you grab it and finish it off.
I know many folks who tried the .410 and gave it up and went back to .12ga for that same reason. more room for error, you cant beat horsepower in a SHTF situation.
Hence the crossbar on a boar spear I guess

I have seen a single shot break gun in 45 long colt with suppressor as a bail gun. I think, but am not positive, that 45 long colt can be fired in a 410 shotty.
The old 12" Kea pistols with .410 slug loads were just the berries for bailed pigs. I rechambered mine for 3" shells and used it with good success on NZDA hare drives in North Canterbury many years ago, always equaling or bettering the drive average.
.410 slug load...the very best are a 1/8th oz load doing 1600fps 1/8th oz I believe is something between 80-90 gns so its like a .243 at 300-400 yards..getting marginal........ shot placement is criticle..... now its childsplay to make that same 3" or even 2 1/2" into a 00 buckshot load which has slightly heavier payload and a little more room for error with 3-5 balls in it. bail loads are great at bail ranges 5-10 yards..not so good a bit further out or if pig suddenly turns on your dogs and you have to try and stop it in a hurry from less than ideal angle.
Yup, Harrington and Richardson single shot for years.
Bloody loud on the dogs.
That SxS shottie for 150 bucks on the buy sell page would be fine.
If you get super keen find some open sights for it and try out slugs
Have I got the deal for you. Dickinson pump. 13 inch barrel with torch and laser. Pm. If Interested
Cheers for responses have got single shot with 18 inch barrel gonna use for pig hunting nice cheap thrasher that can take a real beating 3030 am getting a bit to scratched up in some of the thick spots
Mate I hunt with regularly has a single shot 12 Guage, goes good
I had the missus make me a slim pouch with long strap to go over my shoulder, then as it was winter hunting I'd chuck the parka over the top and voila no see um. Even the guys that I would be hunting with on the trip never caught on unless I told them.
There was nothing legal about that little fella. Firing a solid did open up the webbing in the hollow of your palm. @#$%&*
I think Kea guns were banned after a guy at Te Whetu mill held the Police at bay using a Kea gun firing .303 ammo.
.45long colt can be fired in a non choked .410
