Ha! My first time hunting in there I shot a 10 pointer in the riverbed from the track, 5-10 minutes walk upstream from the hut last week of April in 2009. Was pissing down with rain and the boys were all playing cards in the hut, so my mate Pete twisted my arm to go for a hunt in the rain just on dark.

Left the hut, was soaked within minutes, and came around the corner overlooking an island in the middle of the river just upstream from the forks. There in the gloom and rain was a half decent looking stag (to us at the time) standing in the middle of it looking at us. We had seconds to get a shot away, and I shot it while Peter was pissing around lining it up ... he's never forgiven me haha.

With all the rain, the river was pretty high, so we couldn't cross to get it. We ran back to the hut, grabbed the boat keys and managed to get the boat right up to it to pick it up. Was an adventure coming back down the rapids to the hut in the dark, but made it in one piece. It made a miserably wet weekend into a neat adventure and lasting memory (hopefully)

I also shot a reasonable 12 in there the following year post roar. Right on dark I hit the bush just down stream of the hut, and bumped him holding some hinds on the bush edge. I rushed the shot and lost him among the crown fern in the head of a small creek, spent about 2-3 hours looking for him. It haunted me for ages, confident I had made a kill shot, so I went back a couple years later to the area I lost it and as luck would have it stumbled right onto him. I must have walked past him half a dozen times that year I had shot him. He hangs in our hallway now

I'm drawn to the mountains and the bush, it's where life is clear, where the world makes the most sense.
