    'sight and go' mobile app

Is there any mobile apps that anyone knows of that you can use enter the distance from your rangefinder and it will drop a pin/waypoint or something onto you target to make it easier for animal retrieval in dense bush?
And that way can see with a compass/map where the shot game is and make it easier to find?
    Sorry noob question.

In the nztopo50 app, you can use the option in the bottom left “Go To”. Just enter the distance and bearing and it’ll project a point, which you can then go directly to or save as a waypoint.

Old school... With just compass. Hang bit of toilet paper from shooting spot .take bearing to animal. Set dial.go to where you think it is,take back bearing EG don't put "red in the shed" put white end of needle in shed, then move sideways till your compass pointing back at loo paper.your now either on bullet path or past animal... With known range it's easier still as know which way to head. Or do GPS flag at shooting spot. Range to animal is known, bearing is known so head over where you think it is.move until your distance from shooting spot is right and bearing is 180 degrees from previous

You’re assuming everyone knows how to use a compass and navigate competently @Micky Duck. These days the number of people that can’t navigate, even with a GPS, possibly outnumber those that can. It never fails to amaze me how many can’t even find north or south by sun and time of day.

So true. Did a water sampling job years back, and I was the only one who could do certain areas because the trees/mangroves blocked coverage.

I have bumped into people using the map in their bat phone who had no idea how to read a map let alone a compass. Some had just photographed the map at the road end. I still occasionally use my watch and sun as a quick check of where north is.

True that. As long as you know the time, and can visualise a clock face if necessary, finding Nth is dead easy. Sadly there are individuals walking this earth that don’t know where the sun/ moon rises or sets.

Thanks - never saw/tried that! I already love this app and it just got better. Have played with ‘project waypoint’ on my Fenix but it’s clunky and for all the marketing on RSHC etc it sucks to navigate off.

Yeah, I’ve done the marker + compass thing in the past but it only works if you can see it. Been in lots of situations where it was not possible. Following a bearing only possible if topography allows it. Sure, it’s good to know how to use the old methods when necessary but why not use the tools at your disposal?

There’s going to be a generation who won’t be able to tell the time with a watch never mind use it to find north

    Accuracy is limited by:

Typically you can only get a bearing to +/- 5 degrees with a standard silva compass and im not sure its any better with the compass app on a phone. It would be real good to have an app in your phone camera which showed the bearing when you point a reticle at the destination in the picture.

Distance could be a problem if the ground or line of sight is sloping but your map is flat.

A zoomed in photo of where the deer was can be helpfull if you mark on the pic before leaving your firing point.

An analogue watch with hands is pretty retro these days.
