Thread: Sika Altitude ?

Howdy all.

I’ve got next weekend booked in, and I’m thinking of giving sika a go (have never hunted them before). I’d initially planned on chasing fallow but think the 14/15 probably a bit early for the rut, sika should be going?

I’m planning on looking through the Waimarino catchment from Kiko Rd, had an old timer tell me it was great when he was last here 20 years ago, so with a bit of luck I’ll encounter something. During the roar, are sika more likely to be on the flats, in the bush, or on the tops, or is it more a case of they are where you find them? I’ve read that they’re usually between 900-1100m asl, but not sure if this rings true for the roar.
While I’m at it, can anyone point me in the direction of a crash course in sika vocals, I.e when to single call, heehaw, mew, and what they all mean?
