    BIG picture its great.

its weird how these sort of things dont gain traction, yet a poached 16 pointer goes round the world....... see the issue lol.

big picture puts all of that into perspective....

watched this the other night - really good presentation - the same thing applies to other species as well - public land red deer in the north island is a prime example

    Well done Cam
The number of barren hinds being shot is increasing going by the data gathered by the Sika Foundation through the hunts they run, which is sure indication that sika deer numbers are far above the carrying capacity of the forest they inhabit. Getting hunters to shoot every hind they see outside the breeding season is a culture shift many are not ready to accept, some of the gun cullers who used to hunt the Kawekas say the very best of them shot 1 deer for every 3 encounters, so most of us mere mortals won't be near that and so there is no chance we will eradicate them! The alternative is to let the status quo carry on and when all the palatable species die and are replaced by the unpalatable ones they will through feed deficits die in numbers until they reach the real carrying capacity. Many of the broadleaf trees will no doubt all die one day and will most likely be over finite period of time, light will come in and the broadleaf seedlings will germinate and be cleaned up by the sika, allowing the unpalatable species to dominate. There will still be some broadleaf as it also survives as an epiphyte but it won't provide the same amount of sustenance for the sika population. Once the forest is modified it generally can't be brought back without significant intervention from people. I have hunted around Harkness hut for thirty years and looking at old photos and my memory the deer in there are small and becoming smaller and in lower body condition. If we hunters don't step up then someone else will, DOC is at the moment preparing a deer control plan and it will no doubt have measures in it that will be repugnant to hunters but we haven't provided the control necessary, so we need to respond well as a group and there is no solution without hunters so we need to be grown up and solution focussed to make some headway. Anyway that's my rant!

Ir would help immensely if DoC had a better attitude to access issues. For example; many more allowed helipad sites; perhaps even cutting some of their poison budget and transferring said funds into quad tracks and hunter access roads. These measures would create greater recreational hunter pressure with a corresponding reduction in deer numbers; as Cam alluded to using Clements road as an example. DoC are being remiss in these respects IMO.

One step at time really..... To have a better percieved by DoC hunter would need to prove that the hunter methods are working... just as Cameron is trying to spread and express.

crazy this only has 4-6 replies, post been viewed 400 times , post liked by 10 individuals..... Once it settles in to Th whole, WHOLE community, that this shit should be gospel for the immediate future, and ACTUALLY practising whats preeched- LET the fkn stags go, shoot some more does- Not JUST SIKA, this guys showing it can be used as a bases for many deer species and can be tuned accordingly.

lots of youtube kiwi vids coming out an every single one is a Dead potential beauty Stag...... an none of those fellas have trophy heads on their wall,,,, look at Dodger Roger and his Bro BuBu...... shoot seven hundred deer a year for 3000 views and not one trophy in their friends sheds or friends hunting spots now either

    but ya know....... Culture swings.

    Educate the "community".
    Inspire the Youth
    Conserve the future.

Cameron wont change 30+ year old Blokes deadset in their mindet of Stags = Views, an proberly wont hcnage the old fulla who Eat velvet antlers, but Cameron, along with some more major influence from KIWIs (identifiable fullahs as a collective) influencing the Future should be a prioritiy for alot of "been there done that guys" ,, As they have been there an done it they wont experiene anything like the "good old days" ever again, Until the Mentality and culture begins to Change.. mentalities first, cultures follow.

Social media is blamed for the head culture in Aus..... truth is, it isnt all Social Media, but social media did play a large part in speeding up the killing and enlargening the scale of which young stags are shot to appease the crowds..

the changer will be once the deer get hard to find, thats what everyone wants at the moment, the easy deer, the east stag in the group of does, the easy roaring 3 year old, the easy paddock deer in numbers, the private property choka block of eas ydeer.....

the best thing will be very thin numbers and a whole lot of effort to get em.

then watch everyone go off "goat shooting" or hells bells,,,, the poor old Wallaby will get thin on the ground....

Bloody good presentation and very easy to understand, the evidence is there and the way forward is obvious. Can only reach that goal if everyone has the same mindset.

The recreational hunters and friends, kids, families collectively contribute a heck of a lot to the economy. They generally set good standards for example , having healthy times outdoors instead of peddling drugs and suchlike antisocial activities. DoC spends millions $$ on "tourist tracks and flash huts while also spending millions broadcasting poisons which also target deer. One can only stand amazed that while DoC bemoans deer they do sweet bugger all to facilitate best hunter access. DoC have an attitude that is actually biased to make the substantial hunter / deer management asset the neglected part of society in favour of their continued obsession against the wild animal resources and misspending public funds accordingly IMO.
