I shot this mature good one antlered stag which might be the one antler you show in the video.
Shot on the 12th April. Kaimanawa Rd area.






It looks like he has never had a 2nd antler. Just a skinny bone stub where there should be a pedicle.

I scouted out an area with good scrapes in the late afternoon. I stayed there and setup calling until nearly dark in the rain after finding the scrapes and hearing a couple of different hee-haw calls 200m further on. i didnt push further in as my Dad was coming in the next day after fishing Lake O to come for a hunt. As this was the best area i'd found so far and the only calls during the day i'd heard, i left it until was Dad with me for a proper go. Two hours walk back to the vehicle, an hour in the dark.

The next day we got back up to the first good scapes by about 2.30pm. We setup about 80m further in than the evening before. Dad to my left 15m looking along and down. My dog Frost and i on the right looking along and up.
I let off some calls and got a fairly quick response in the form of a low moan about 150m away. After 25minutes of waiting with the odd few calls and another replying moan that was closer and a bit lower the stag eventually snuck in low to the left. Dad had seen it before me and raised his .222, he'd left his scope cover on as it was drizzling, so his scope had condesated up. I hadnt even noticed Dad move or his scope issue. I'd seen it by now at about 25meters so was focused hard on the Stag. The stag's good top was glaring like a beacon to me and i thought it was a good 8 pointer. As soon as the stag stepped into a gap so i could see his neck, i mew'd, he stopped and i bowled him over with my 6.5prc.
The dog was great and didnt even move when i shot. He's so chill just like his name Frost.
Was stoked heading down to it, but was soon a touch deflated when i saw it was one antlered.
Still it was a bloody decent stag that was mature and abit more wiley than the usual young ones that rush in.

The antler he has is pretty good though.
I like your scope cover. Use the same setup.

Nice stags and video. How did you find the sika stags roared this year?
Also in the video at around 11minutes what are you using to mew at the stag? Sounded primo.

Didn’t even notice the inner tube on your scope, until I read 7mm comment. I’ve done the same for years (suppressor too)
Mine unrolled by accident one day and I was surprised it seemed to have very little effect. Awesome in the rain!

I bet your freezer is never empty. Watched one of your other ones yesterday, good to see you getting in close on them

@Roarless20 Awesome stag mate and good yarn about it too. the one antlered stag i saw was on the 27th April so definitely a different one haha, however similar looking.
Always an accomplishment knowing you have outsmarted a mature stag.

@Nick.m thanks, i found the stags roared good but later in april this year, however i have heard a lot of others saying they didnt have much luck? i did spend a lot of time in the bush this roar.
The mews at the 11min mark and through the whole video are just my voice, sometimes i can get it higher than other times, haha. but i practice mewing heaps, often while i am travelling in the car

Yea I'd probably concur with that.. most of the roaring I had was from the 17th onwards. Plenty around 17th to 20th but didn't hear much earlier in the piece. Still a pretty decent roar though.

Those were good mews mate, i find it hard to be consistent with my mews/roars aswell someday i wake up and can roar like a jap the next day a donkey. The cars a good place to practice

It doesn't matter if you're consistent with the sounds your making. The deer make some bloody random sounds, especially with hybrid stags in the mix.

I can hew-haw 5-6 times and also single call with my voice. I practiced in the car too
I have a Aj caller to save my throat and also position it away from me with the remote also.

Yeah I have inner tube on all my scopes and suppressors. Protects from scratches and cuts down on scratch/knock noise.
The sunshade with the tube tight for an inch in front is my rain bush hunting setup. I screw the sun shade on and put a flip cap at the ocular end. I never have to wipe the scope and it doesn't fog.
