Thread: Simi-DIY Tahr and Chamois Hunt

Hello everyone!

I'm new to the group and have already found a ton of great information here!

My wife and I are traveling to the South Island in April to hunt Tahr and Chamois. Our plan is to land in Christchurch, rent a car, and then head to the West Coast, where we'll be flown in for about five days of hunting. This will be our first time in New Zealand, and I'm trying to figure out where to store our rifle for the brief periods when we won’t be hunting. I’ve heard that it’s possible to leave it at a police station – is that correct?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I see you put up a post on the Hunting New Zealand page on FB. Be careful with the info via that platform....only saying for the sake of playing it safe. Yes I believe some firearms dealers maybe be able to provide firearm storage services, others on here will likely chime in with advice and/or offers depending on your plans while in NZ.
Just for your own sake take what you read on FB with a grain of salt James.

I doubt a police station will take it. Im 45 minutes too an hour north of Greymouth. I can put it in my safe for you if that works for you.

That picture was my 2023 Rocky Mountain Elk taken in the state of Oregon. I took it with my bow at 10 yards; it was a really cool hunt!

Good to know! You are right we will be going through Greymouth on our way to get picked up by the helicopter. We are flying with Fox Franz Heliservices. It looks like it is about 2 hours south of Greymouth.
