Thread: Size of your hunting knife?

I’ve just been watching a discussion on Newshub Nation about the recent Auckland attack. During this discussion the journalist stated that this person twice bought hunting knife. He went on to state “the really big” hunting knifes.

So as a hunter, I only carry small knifes. One to keep the weight down, and two because it is not practical to try and skin a goat with a Rambo knife. How big are the knifes you guys use?

It just grieves me that Hunters are being associated with this type of thing again.

6-8" blade is as big as normally carry...4-5"folder is fine,any shorter it slows things down.

My Svord with a 6” blade has been with me nearly 41 years. It’s ample for my needs.

Yer wondered the same thing while reading the news article. 5" fixed blade and 3" folder is all I ever used.

Started out with a Muela Pigsticker which was ok for breaking goats down for parts, but shit for backsteaks, I find the shorter knife made by a family friend a lot more versatile.

These are the ones I maily use, don't take the boning knife out with me just use it for when I've got whole animal or quarters back at home.

All mine are less than 15cm - indeed 10cm is my most handy sheath knife.

However, in the kitchen I have 20 - 25cm blades, and the Dick chefs knife or even the New World Smeg santoku would have me in the ED if I am not paying 100% attention to the task at hand.

How do u find the black sheffield knife. Does it hold an edge?

Same answer all all other knife threads. Mercator 85mm ish.

Usually carry it as spare. I have only used it quartering a pig which I've only ever done once. It needed a whip over mates steel after cutting through skin on front shoulder.(mates svord was in similar state after doing other side) need to use it more and on deer which more familiar with to get solid answer. I'm happy with it for $12.

4" blade.......its all you need.....

For a hunting knife I have found blades of 4 - 4.5 inches to work best.
As a tramper staying in huts a swiss army knife worked great.
Once you start processing wood for shelter or fires then the larger styles become more useful. In the jungle I became a big fan of the kukhri.
When you look at the types of blades used by people in the third world they tend to be large (and cheap).

But lets be honest now. Its not about knives, its about the media pushing their favourite product which is fear. Fear is one of the few feelings our brains cant ignore and as such is an excellent product to sell.

I see Jacinda is already promising new anti terror laws. If their past track record is anything to go by they will focus more on striping Kiwis of civil liberties and less on effective legislation.
