For a hunting knife I have found blades of 4 - 4.5 inches to work best.
As a tramper staying in huts a swiss army knife worked great.
Once you start processing wood for shelter or fires then the larger styles become more useful. In the jungle I became a big fan of the kukhri.
When you look at the types of blades used by people in the third world they tend to be large (and cheap).
But lets be honest now. Its not about knives, its about the media pushing their favourite product which is fear. Fear is one of the few feelings our brains cant ignore and as such is an excellent product to sell.

I see Jacinda is already promising new anti terror laws. If their past track record is anything to go by they will focus more on striping Kiwis of civil liberties and less on effective legislation.
