I've done heaps of range shooting at distance and shot plenty of deer at 500yards + with a sling looped over the barrel.
I make sure the loop is not too tight and make sure that while I'm shooting it's out of the way and not under any sort of tension.
It's a great way to carry a rifle with a longer barrel over your shoulder as you can adjust the loop further up the barrel to make the rifle sit lower on your back than a typical sling.
If you are concerned, fit the sling so you can adjust it right out and slide the loop off the barrel when your setting up the rifle for a shot.
Should be similar to your safari sling
