So you think you are in the back of beyond!!

Just spent a week in the Raukumara Ranges - flown in by chopper. Second day I run into a guy way up on a slip who said he was a goat culler (turns out he and his mate were deer/goat culling for DoC, and there were no goats in the area!!!). I also find out that there are two more guys just over the top ridges who were hunting. The next day a chopper buzzes over my son and I, and lands on a small pad across the valley from us, and he lets out a couple of guys who we can hear laughing. Bloody hell - it was like milking time on Dundees raceway.
Not a moan was heard for the week, despite a hell of a lot of climbing and sidling. Found some beaut wallows that were just starting to be explored, but no replies to a few moans from me.
Reubags scores a barking hind who hung around a bit too long, so at least we had some veni to take home, along with a bit of pork.
Just goes to show though - just because you are way the hell back in the hills, there is always the potential to run into someone else. Let's all be careful. It just may be me that is crashing through the bush.

While it is normally very quiet, for the next month it is tent city and number of the camp sites are quite close. I also don't think there is a booking system for the helicopter operators like in the Kawekas, Kaimanawas and Ruahines. I spend a while chasing roaring stags in there each year and I just have to cross my fingers that no one else will have been flown into where I like to camp.

Mate just went in yesterday. He says it's like that every year and it takes a few hours walk from the chopper to get some breathing space. I find that funny as every time I've been in there I haven't seen a soul
