Soon there will be nothing to hunt....sell ya rifles

Home from work tonite, to find the helicopters busy dropping 1080 all over pirongia mountain up behind my house. Thought I may head across to a spot in the pureora this weekend..... But nah it's getting its annual drop as well. So I sit down in front of TV to find tonight, that the big Bay Area in fiord land is getting a massive drop, and it is going to be turned into a so called pest free area, and it is going to set the benchmark for other areas in this country. I hate stoats ferrets, rats, etc as much as the greenies, but soon our nz bush is going to be void of game animals, for all our children to hunt and enjoy... And learn. Anyone want to buy a sako finlite 7m08.

Porongia local groups had one of the best trapping regimes going a few years ago and a very low pest count. DOC/AHB/WRC came in over the top of their good work and demoralised those who had worked so hard. I think they have all packed their traps and given up now.

Got to get your local NZDA onto deer repellant, we have had a great win in the lower north, still 1080 but with repellant

They will be targeting the deer for sure in the big bay area. Possums are done reasonably well by certain individuals but there are oodles of deer I am sure they are really after

It's ridiculous there are so many ways to get trappers out there, considering the technology for trapping has really advanced the past couple of years and has proven incredibly effective in pest control.
So many people would love a trapper job - excuse to get out there and get paid.
But then there are also a helluva lot of people who'd do it voluntarily as well.
Had a huge conversation about this with a lot of trampers a few weeks ago... most of them were foreigners (some French military) - they were amazed about 1080 use when there's advanced technology and control methods.

Doesn't sound very Kiwi-spirited does it? Seems so backwards compared to the days of Govt paid hunters...

We had same "luck" in the southern lakes too, deer repellent in few popular areas.

We had a good drop last year, the farmer at the end of the road who is surrounded 20 thousand hectares of bush allowed them to fly out of his place with the proviso that repellant was used, what do you know over the next few days he found on his races a far number of dead deer it just did not seem to work very well. Has anyone else seen this??

The animal health board recently did a couple of drops down here in southland surprisingly they used deer repellent so I went for a wonder at 1 area didn't find any dead deer and plenty if sign about I asked the health board bloke if they had any reports of dead deer he said they had 1 reported out in a paddock but it turned out to have a bullet in its side...he made the hunting prospects sound pretty promising.
Makes you wonder how bad the 1080 really is Iv heard of fallow deer taking big hits .

Boaraxa mate thats good that it didn't bowl over many there all I can think of is the deer are pretty hungry here with the beech forests being fairly lean, I have noticed that there is a lot of new broadleaf etc on the Forrest floor and the animals I do see/shoot are well fed. With what I've experienced it seems to thin the numbers of animals( like you said the fallow get hammered) but hey that only helps to make me a better hunter right? That's a sweet animal in your avatar was that from down there? Cheers Blair

There's actually some forums on that here and I've seen poisoned pigs, deer and cows in real life. Pretty gruesome stuff when you come across it.
