Thread: Southern Kaimai's

With post-virus life picking up and family commitments easing come next weekend, I'm looking to venture into the Southern Kaimais.

My initial thought was to hunt off the Te Tuhi track, but I'm wondering if it's possible to stalk up, I think it's the Mangaputa, from somewhere around the end of Barton Road / the quarry?

Would anyone know if this is doable?

It's my first of hopefully many ventures into this area. Looking to fly camp on the way up, maybe go look at Mangamuka hut to see what's up.

Yeh, now that I have more time to check the terrain instead of sneaking looks at work, I see it's up over the ridge and then the river runs to the east.

So, I'm assuming it's doable.

I believe the Waikato Branch NZDA is doing a trip to Mangamuka hut this weekend.
Get in touch and ask if you can go with them.

I don't think there is public access up through the quarry but if you know a freindly farmer anywhere along there it could be very good. You either have to go up the Te Tuhi track, or up Wairere falls or in from the Kaimai summit. Both are quite a distance to walk to Mangamuka but there's similar country around those. High plateaux nice bush, swamps and occasional clearings (interspersed with a certain amount of supplejack).

Missus is doing a diploma and exams are this weekend, so not an option, otherwise, for sure.

Yeah, took me longer than that. Desk jockeying seems a poor way to train to get up mountains.
