Well @GNAR, I hope you have fun in your adventures into the Kaimai's. I just hope you don't think you can enter the park via the summit on the Tauranga/Hamilton highway and fish in the Whaitawheta stream as they are a five day walk apart. If you are going to hunt the tracks, then be mindful of other users of the park as not all will be happy with your presence. Keep in mind that if you do stick an arrow into an animal, it is going to run away to die...it ain't gunna drop on the spot...so you will need to learn tracking skills, like, real fast. That deer is going to go deep into the shit at a remarkable speed.
Which is worse, ignorance or apathy...I don't know and don't care.
Everyone has too start somewhere.
I get the feeling this guy should do just fine , alot of us are self taught and the kaimais have taught a few know it alls a thing or too in the past aswell.
+1 i agree, just get out there Gnar, the only way to learn is by making mistakes, lets all hope its not a 'biggie'......
take the sensible approach, if you go in by yourself tell 'someone' the area your going to hunt and expected time you will be back!!!!!
enjoy it mate, its what its all about....go slay em tiger!!!!!
While I might not be as good as I once was, Im as good once as I ever was!
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
I went to Kaimai today.
I found some deer dropping after 10 minutes going up, but after that I didn't see any signs.
I saw two fresh human foot prints who seems to be hunters, I followed it and one ended after 20 minutes and the other disappeared after 1 hour of going up.
Which tells me they went off track not very far from entrance.
I was trying to follow the deer droppings but the vegetation was too thick and it was pretty hard to go through with bow in one hand.
Also it was so hard to find the way back when I go off the track.
I heard a few roars(?) but I wasn't sure if it was a buck, a hunter or a sheep around there.
So after going up for like 1hour and 30 minutes, I came to stream that I couldn't jump over. I wasn't prepared for this and I didn't want my shoes wet when I have 1 and a half hour to walk more. So decided to just head back.
I saw some chickens on the way back down. Am I allowed to shoot them?
Is hand held gps useful for finding way back to track?
I saw about 4 puddles around track. Do deer come to the puddles for bath or drink often around track? That is where I found deer droppings.
The mountain was great, I will be going back next week.
I will be back shortly...just need to check on my chooks. And I must get something to suppress this cough...don't want an arrow through me.

Take your shoes off ya bloody girl..."didn't want my feet wet"... FFS

Gumboots!!!...you are supposed to be a bow hunter...you know, super stealth mode...not glosh glosh glosh.
Which track did you go up today?

good on you for getting up there! hand held gps unit, topo map compatible is a good piece of kit to make sure you can get yourself back to the track. Did alot for my confidence when I got one and learned how to use it properly.
Especially in the kaimai where navigation can be difficult, dont forget to pack the good ol compass as well though. wouldnt expect to hear too many roars at this time of year tho.
maybe a chicken with stags attiude??
