Not sure he knows his pronouns? I guess it is more than likely a genetic cause for the tines to be turned down. It makes for an interesting trophy on the wall. Both stags were shot in the Harkness Valley and would probably travelled there for the roar. The recent collar research indicates the stags do target feed areas for the time outside of the roar - mid march to mid May. One collared stag travelled about 16 km to his rutting ground in the eastern Kaweka Range then followed his trail back to Poronui at the end of the roar. Some stags stay on location, my hunting buddy shot one of the DOC collared stags at Harkness 6 years after he was captured, he had a brass tag in his ear. I have his full tracking records and he stayed local, and was past his peak when taken, but still an 8 pointer.Name: IMG_2224.JPG

Marlborough stag, passed up on a few deer during the roar searching for a stag but never found it, good to get some meat on the ground

What was the nunber on his ear tag..... @craigc got a hind in the Kaweka a few years ago with a tag. DOC Hawke's Bay could probably tell you where it was tagged and released.

He was number 28 and the map below shows his capture location and his movements from March to November. Stag was shot SW of high point 1344.

A small 8pt Sika I shoot a couple of Fridays ago.
I needed to get the dog out for a stalk in the bush as he hadn't had any work since start of May.
So an easy close to the vehicle overnighter was decided.
We got onto deer everywhere we looked but couldn't get a shot due to the swirly breeze.
This guy got unlucky as we stalked through the bush along a drop off. The dog indicating solidly to our close right, turns out the deer was to our front but the wind swirl was confusing the direction.
I shot the stag in the eye at 16m. 260rem 120gr gold dot. Smashed the skull but I glued it together at home.

That’s a very nice Rusa, you must be happy with him, they don’t come easy as a rule.
