Well done @dannyb and @Rangidan, great seeing the kids getting onto some animals.

Very good Catlins stag @kiwigreen.Would have been epic seeing that come through the tight shit!
Some from the weekend. Not on DOC land, so they don't count in my mind- but I'm not a trophy hunter in any event so the meat is the point of the exercise.

My first roaring sika, pretty young animal but will make good salami. Next time will be looking for a better set of head gear. Awesome experience, stags going nuts round camp overnight.
It took all roar to get a stag. 26 April and he roared and had a hind.

Nice one.
Couple of roars heard today...some cool interactions in the bush with 5 stags seen and 1 shot.....fantastic indications from the dog, with me stuffing the first one.... but this one didnt get away... bush very dry and challenging with extra leaf litter around, but then we could also hear the stags moving about too....

its been a strange roar eh Hamish. 2 days ago (26th) I saw a stag (a poor head) herding 6 hinds and yearlings. It's pretty late for that.
This fella got the slip on me earlier in the month, Tracked him down last Saturday, wasn't so lucky this time.

2 stags still going well on sunday in canterbury .most of the young stags were all mobbed up with a few pestering the hinds
Was nice to take a day of leave to make a long weekend with ANZAC day.

Where's @Pongo12 this year?
yea @Pongo12 where are you?this thread looking a bit average this year so far
Sorry team, ive hung the stag hunting boots up this year. 1st time in 20 odd years I haven't gotten right into it.
Guided the brother in on a couple and what not.
Walloped a couple with the .357 as ive been in native pig hunting but that's about it, been flat out chasing the hogs around with the dogs so the poor 7mmsaum is retired to the safe.
See a few nice looking stags you chaps have walloped, good work and happy hunting.
Haha yea I did enjoy it. Even sold all the heads off rafters, proper clean out.

HOLY FECK :o:o:o Do you know how many heads are hanging in the picture @Pongo12? Are they all wild/hunted deer?
Glad that's the reason @Pongo12. Was worried you cared about the haters. Get em next year
You guys can lust over those dead heads. That pile of wood excites me. Looks like Matai. Something that is like gold around here.
That was back a year or 2 ago. Think I sold 170 odd heads, yes all wild.
Yea thats a mix of maire, matai and totara, goes good
hard antler going for what now$35-40 per kg..makes picking up cast jobbies worth the effort.
Nothing a welder and some heavy duty crusher screen or such won't fix. In the days when Rata was plentiful here there were some "unique" looking fireplaces also.
But then fires places were made to last, not like these modern things that crap themselves after the first winter of burning native.
Sold a couple of sets of good antlers last yr.About $160 each,no good hanging in the garage collecting dust.Few more $$$ for diesel n bullets.
I wish I'd known that -I left those fallow antlers on the ground!
Couple of sika stags I shot in April.
A young 7 pointer with the bent nose gene.

And my PB sika. 30"wide & 28.5" long 10 pointer (two snags coming off the brow tines)(His skull is 10" long for reference).
I saw his massive rub tree a week before so new to target his spur. Luckily I caught him out just above the bush edge of his spur on last light.
Attachment 249697
A weak top on one side and well over spread will really penalise his score, but either way I'm stoked as he is by far the largest sika head I've seen on the hill!
Attachment 249698
The sambar stag I shot in January with the 223. 185m headshot (all I could see). I've posted this in the '223 on deer' thread previously.
29" long on the unbroken side and 29.5" spread.

either you have really short legs or that is a massive skull..a real horse of a beast.
10th of May and this one was still letting out the odd roar.

Unfortunately couldn’t find a good sika this roar, but had a half day hunt yesterday morning out Clements into a new area I’ve been learning recently and found this guy wandering around below me in some crown fern so took the opportunity to take a clements road stag after a couple last weekend outsmarted me. I managed to bugger up all my limited chances with Reds during the roar but had some awesome stalks but a bit of bad luck at the end - was happy enough to be out in the bush.
I shot this wee guy in the Blueys a couple of weeks ago, nothing to write home about but a big day on the hill and was really happy to get him just before dark after covering a lot of ground.
