Had got the satellite stag, young 8 pt 3 days before, and was a little bit happy when he came in.

The story behind this guy is what I'll remember the most - chased him for three weeks, eventually found a way into his lair, hobbited in, found him and did the deed. Apparently not a bad head for the northern Pureoras.

That's the 7th deer I've shot with the 1885 30-40 since late February when I shot a 14 pointer with my modern rifle

The 30-40 has proven pretty handy inside 250m
This 180 grain RN Hornady in the off side shoulder on a 15m shot
This was a very big stag with an extremely thick hide

    Stags and Bucks 2025

No big trips for me this year, just a few day hunts and overnighters. Still managed to get onto a few animals and have some fun with friends and family. Mostly hunted on open public land blocks this year as we lucked out on ballots…saw a lot of hunters, which is cool and not so cool!

My eldest (9) shot his first deer at one of my forests, perfect front on, 120m shot. Sacked it on the spot. Pretty cool, I shot my first deer when I was 9 and it was a spiker too. He was chuffed.

Buck with boys and wife. Boys spotted it before me so we had to shoot it.

Scrappy stag with stick and string

Young fella with a buck croaking hard in the bush. He’d got an arrow into him at 30yds but we needed the rifle to finish him off. Awesome hunt (haven’t asked to share his face )

Old stag on heavily hunted public land, caught him sneaking out a gully below us after the wind swung and spooked some hinds.

Another old boy. Started roaring 20 minutes before dark and managed to entice him out with some roaring and antler scraping on a post. He circled the bush line onto a big open face and my cousin pulled off an awesome 450m shot. (Haven’t asked to share cousins face )

    Cheers,
    Josh
I'm drawn to the mountains and the bush, it's where life is clear, where the world makes the most sense.
