Thread: Starting out slow... places for beginners

Hi all,
Hope I don’t get told to suck to many eggs for this, but here goes…

I would like some advice on a good location to get out doors and introduce my kids to hunting, or more to the point, shooting away from a range until they are ready for something on four legs… (they are ready for bunnies…)

Some background; they are 10 & 8 years old, seasonal tampers, however this year has been pretty well non-existent… and have spent all their shooting time on the local DS range shooting 22LR and 223 mostly. Both are safety conscious and enthusiastic.

I was planning on heading to the Tongariro National park, Kiamanawa’s or somewhere closer to home for a few nights, but just wanted to drive off a side road and walk into the bush for a few km’s and set up a tent.
Then spend the time looking for animals (but not shooting them unless it’s a bunny…partly because I would not know what to do with it if it was any bigger…) or finding nice safe clearings with embankments or whatever for some recreational shooting.

My youngest would like to take in his 22LR, but DOC don’t allow this small calibre without a small game licence, something I am investigating now.

And looking at the online maps it seems the public access land is the same as the open public hunting area...

Any advice on the above would be greatly appreciated.
…we don’t really want to get in the way of the more serious recreational hunter, especially if we end up making a lot of noise!

It's Spooks bus. He lives at the bottom of Thompsons Track. good old bugger and knows the Kaimais better than most around here.

A lot of people from this forum and another have spent time there and done improvements...but I must of fucked them off as no one has been back for ages.

It has had worse than Waikato slobbered all over it

Some of the farmers that do paid fallow hunts up that way may let you roam about with the boys for a small fee if you explain the situation. It would be woth a few bucks too guaranty the boys a few things too shoot at id guess.
don't forget wallabys either
