His luggage will be opened after check-in and an inspection card left in it but all should be sweet (unless he goes for industrial quantities). I've done it heaps of times.

Without resorting to the fudd label those projectiles were historically very cheap and when you're just blasting away with a semi then the cost savings were really good. Nowadays there's not much point although it is good fun poking holes in metal with AP rounds.

Yep cheap, and tracer fun and useful to teach ballistics. Tracer is less effective than normal projectiles. The others usual cheap for practice or collectible, can't recall any particular use of them by criminals.

But you need to make people who own them criminals right?

As everyone has said, it's easy enough at this end.

For many years, I've done my bit to try to normalise the carriage of firearms and ammunition as checked baggage on international flights. Some airlines are more cooperative than others. Sometimes it's great fun, other times, a bit more hassle than absolutely necessary. Explaining what components are can be hard work.

My most recent experience, just this week, has been frustrating. I've got a couple thousand primers which I though would come in handy at the local lead lobbing lanes.

After an initial refusal, one airline acquiesced when shown the relevant part of their own website. Sweet! Just like the old days.

My connecting flight with another airline though was no go despite multiple calls, indeterminable lengths of time on hold and trying everything to reason with them.

novembersierra: I'd like authorisation to travel with projectiles and primers please

Airline: What are projectiles? Are they explosive?

novembersierra: No! They're not explosive! They're pieces of lead!

    Airline: What calibre are they?

    novembersierra: Thirty calibre

Airline: Thirty calibre! The largest we are permitted to carry is nine millimetre. Thirty calibre must be very dangerous!

novembersierra: WTF!!! No No No, you don't understand. They're actually seven point six two millimetre

Airline: Oh, OK then. Are you sure they're not explosive?

novembersierra: They're not explosive. And the primers?

Airline: What are primers? Are they explosive?

novembersierra: No they're not explosive. Blah, blah blah.

So you can see this was going nowhere fast. In the end I just noped out.

Wouldn't be much point to non explosive primers would there?
Well you know that, and I know that, but my objective was to get the airline to allow me to fly with them.

Unsuccessful this time, but I'll try a different tack next time

There's a plethora of things that people don't need - The Kardashians for example, or in developed countries, bottled water. Thankfully, we're a society based on wants, not needs.
