So the long and the short of it is, I've still not shot a deer. I've been out at least twice a month since March. Mostly down Turangi ways after Sika, but also Gizzy and the Tararua's. I've been lucky enough to be under the wing of a couple of experienced hunters who have been nothing short of awesome(although they always get them when I'm not there). I've camped out in the snow, met some great people, seen my first deer in the wild and almost shot a pig. Its all been heaps of fun. Found new spots and place's I'll be going back to. Endless hours on the google web looking for "new places" or places I've heard about. I would like to get one soon. Maybe before the years out.......but I'm not too fazed.

Because I know all this will eventually result in me bagging my first deer. All the hard yards will, at sometime, come to fruition. And when it does happen, I'm going to be one pretty chuffed 35yr old, semi balding, ex vegetarian, builder/ spearfisherman/ surfer.......... Yeeeaaah :D

Waterpig I have enjoyed reading this. The hunt should always be the important part of your journey not the kill.

Hey thanks Scribe. I also forgot to mention getting the lux stuck in the mud the weekend before last with about an hour of light left, having to leave my mate there while I hitched back to Turangi to get the father in law to winch me out. Then both of us getting stuck again simultaneously and having to ring up another of his friends to come pull us both out....... on a Saturday night........in the middle of nowhere.......needless to say it cost quite a few dozen and I copped mild amount of @#%.........it was kinda funny though.

I am still chuckling over the very enthusiastic 'almost shot a pig' Now that is a funny statement if you examine it. If you fired a shot and missed the pig 'a miss is as good as a mile'. If you didn't shoot at it then you could not have 'almost shot it.

It makes you smile too when you hear a young teenager say 'I almost caught a fish I had a big bite'

Its an enthusiasm that is contagious and that is no bad thing is it.

my mate shot one recently that broke from the dogs and charged him, so close he "shot from the hip" when it was all over the deceased pigs snout thingy was resting on his boot.
He reckoned first stop when he go home was a change of undies

Good stuff waterpig keep at it.,it will soon be silly yearling time.

When you shoot one (and it will happen) you will probably sit next to it dumbfounded for a few minutes as a wave of awesomeness hits you. All the best on popping your cherry

Yeah mate....just keep going it will happen, i got my first this year after many frustrating trips, the first two deer i took a shot at i missed....got the third...perseverance is KEY.....

Whilst I've started referring to my unsuccessful hunts as 'armed tramps' it does not diminish in the least the massive enjoyment I get from just being out there in the hills. The little plus on the side is that tramping is deemed to be healthy exercise by those who also watch our family budget, whereas an unsuccessful hunt rubs in the cost of gas and nothing in the freezer. I shall continue to enjoy my armed tramping (I feel naked without my rifle) and simply appreciate it all the more when next time I do happen upon a deer or pig!

Never let frustration interfere with your hunting...hunting is about getting away from the frustrations of life...do not retrieve spent cases of shots that miss, they were fucken useless bullets anyway. As you get down on reloadable cases because of poor shooting your aim will improve...I have missed more deer than you have fingers and toes...never aim 'at' a deer, aim for a specific spot, aiming 'at' a deer and you will miss every bloody time, this I know...been there, done that. I have missed that side on, standing like a statue, 50 metre, rack like you have never seen before (or since), standing in a clearing the size you could build a house on...one shot at the forward end of the body (standing looking at me), a second 'at it' as it bolted and a third to make sure it kept running...went back to camp and denied it was me bombing up, mate grabs my pants pocket and jingle jingle go the three empty cases.

Yeah........ "nearly shot a pig" pretty much describes it about as accurately as I could hope to put it! My mate was in front of me ever so slightly, but off to the left by a fair bit, and I didn't take it because he was still "in front" of me....... had its head in the crosshairs the whole time....... My mate also had his bow, so I was also kinda thinking it might be the only chance he would get.......I let him take the shot and he missed!!!! So yeah Scribe, I almost shot a pig!!!.........so, so close........but I still think it was the right choice.

Bloody right. There are not many places i go or activities that i take part in where i can completely relax and switch off from the bullshit of life but in the hills or in the bush hunting is just magic for the mind.
