Thread: Strong wind and deer

Missed getting to the Blueys today ( family reason) but it’s VERY windy around here anyway.

So wondering what do deer behave like when it’s very windy? (I’m sure I have shot one or two when it was very windy butt never thought at the time about how the wind might affect their behaviour)

skittery as heck...the constant noise upsets them and swirling breeze makes it a PIA to stalk.....the bit before a southerly hits can be really interesting .

That would sum up today exactly.
Don’t feel quite so bad at missing out getting to the Blueys today...

My experience in the Kaimai's has been that during easterly storms the deer move from the BoP to the Waikato side to avoid the wind and eat up large on windfall leaf, when the Waikato gets a westerly or southerly blast they move to the BoP side and hang out on the sunny old slip faces.

strong wind in one direction is good , had some quite memorable bush stalks as the deer had zero clue I was only meters away , all the branch's swaying & leaves rustling cover my bush bashing nicely .

It was north-west today @Finnwolf a very difficult wind to hunt in. Swirling effect is very bad. I don't bother going to Blueys if a strong northwest is forecast.

Easterly on the other hand tends to be a very steady wind which is helpful.

Was calm as on the western side of the Blueys today

Yes - a sprinkle of Causmag on them there paddock too - yes

If that was near Waihola today those cows would have been blown all the way to the north end of the race and been pelted by the small stones in the race!
Lake Waihola looked the colour of a mug of Milo.

Walked onto many a deer in a good north west wind in bush clearings.The strong wind blocks their radar sencers.

Wind, even stong wind,is productive to hunt in
Only unpleasant for us, its part of the deer environment and they will nearly always find somewhere out of the wind, and in the sun to mooch around.
