Suggestions re locations please first solo (withoutme) deer hunt for my son

    Hi All,
My 18yr son and one of his mates are looking to go on their first solo hunt around the X-mas -New year period.
About his time of year a long time back (1990's) I always came back with meat from Waiawa hunt in the Urewera's.
Was always quiet and no one outside of the lake side camping grounds.

My last hunt in there was just after it reopened after the change of ownership. Used to leave the car just off the side of the road for a couple of night and touch wood never had a problem. This would have been about November 3-4 years back and it had been thrashed every week for the proceeding 6 weeks from the hut book. My younger son got a large hind on the way in on dusk by the river and that was all we saw.

Any suggestions as to what it's like now?? is it a good excuse for a road trip ??
    Still Quiet??

We are in northland so don't get local feed back on many places.

Open to suggestions for other areas as well that are likely to be quiet at this time of year?

Could try mid okahu campsite. There's a road that goes through the camp and all the way into the bush. There's the Rogers hut not too far into the bush.

Would pay to call doc and get a heads up on road conditions as it was washed out.

    Thanks.
    Will look that one up.
Have also had the Waipakihi river in the Kaimanawa's suggested.
Do have to walk a reasonable way up the river to get DOC land on both sides.
From looking at it on line you would probably have to head up the private side of the river bank for a way before it shallows up enough to cross.

    Just looked up Rogers hut.
That looks to have some nice grassy clearing in the surrounding bush and rivers.

You can always use the queen's chain for access along the river.

Think you still need the land owners permission to cross with firearms. Otherwise it might be aggravated trespass.

Waipakihi just stick to riverbank as much as possible as the river itself is public land. Or just bowl up Urchin or Umaikarikari tracks and drop down where you wish. That river walk is a PITS

Thanks preacher. I have been up both of those 2. One in early may and the other too early in spring for good growth. found a few dead ones and some fresh hoof prints. passed a young guy on his way to the Waipakihi river.
I just found it too psychologically hard to give up all that attitude and drop back down to the river again. Now if I was 25 years younger!!!!

my boy would probable consider it challenge.
