    Summer Tahr hunting west coast

Morning guys, im currently in Hawea making my way up the west coast. Where would i best to day trip up and look for my first tahr? Looking at the brewster track as an option on the way out to the coast but have no clue really. Any local knowledge would be great, cheers

I've heard Mt Fox is sometimes a good look, but I'd be weary of tourists in the way.

Are you restricted too a day trip? If not head to Cassel flat hut in the Karangarua. A 5-6 hour tramp.

If that interests you then PM me and I'll tell you where you should see some Tahr not too far from there.

    Probably need two nights

Could do an over nighter but time is a little stretched getting back for the ferry on the 10th and seeing all that the coast has on offer!

Brewster is a bit of a highway these days. The Copland is good I’ve found, up the tributaries of it.

Copland is closed for hunting December January because of the high visitor numbers

Oh I didn’t know that thanks for the info. Can you still access the side creeks like architect etc, or is it completely closed?

Architect is not for the faint hearted. Pity the dogs are running the show, that Copeland is a choice place but need to pay to stay in hut, probably pay to see neked girls in the hot pools.

And it's 30 bucks a night now. Something like 15 to stay in the rock Biv. The booking system really doesn't work for hunters either, when you are working around trying to fit in a trip with the weather.

Most serviced huts cost a decent bit, heading west coast monday for a look around.
