Thread: Suppressors and water

Having recently done a week in Urewera where it rained every day I got to thinking about what effect some water in my suppressor would have.
It’s a dpt so I was disassembling it every night and drying it out. Every night there was a small amount of water in every baffle.
How is accuracy affected with larger amounts of water in them?
I assume they’re still safe to fire?

Large amounts of water I would expect it to go pop. Water can't expand...barrel is a no no , but I'm unsure of supressor... I'd prefer to keep supressor dry I'm every condition I could possibly be in.

Don’t know about bigger caliber but I’ve been dealing with a bit of rainwater getting in 223 suppressor over last couple weeks. Seems to cope ok although the mist in front of rifle and steam coming out of suppressor looks impressive at times. Have thought about taping suppressor but unsure if it’ll work same as bare barrel. Sonic 30 suppressor. As for disassemble/clean each night, sod that.

I always tape over my suppressor works the same as tape over the barrel

Yeah I have spare tape cut to size on the suppressor. Immediately replace once I've shot an animal. Should be air tight with a round in the rifle

Funny you should say that. One pissing wet day I shot at a spiker and it was noticeably quieter. Almost subsonic quiet.

the Duleys thought that too in episode year of two back...kept an empty round in chamber and muzzle taped in pouring rain conditions....laughed my arse off when they finally opened bolt and heap of water came out...the H2O gets in everywhere..... carry muzzle down helps no end and your not supposed to tape a .224 muzzle as it will effect accuracy lots more than the bigger calibres.

As above nothing will stop water it eventually gets in everything. Tape for me is used to stop mostly bush getting in barrel and keep out drops from wet bush or while walking. DPT's are fantastic for being able to strip down and dry out. @Micky Duck I tape my 223 and have never noticed a change in accuracy.

Think I've read somewhere about co2 being introduced into the silencer to stop first round pop.
Possibly a small amount if water in there would do a similar thing. Work like a cooling agent on the burning gases.

well I shall just have to give it a go myself then LOL... its one of them things been said since,well forever....

I use a rubber on the end of my suppressor. Needs to be a thick one tho or gets shredded in the bush. More suitable for open areas

When I was with the NZ Mountain Safety Council, we did some interesting tests with taped muzzles...result was that if the tape was stretched tightly over the muzzle, it sometimes changed the point of impact..if the tape was loosely fitted over the muzzle, it didn't. A condom placed so the closed end was slack over the muzzle (as in with your partner) held with a rubber band was most effective. And it's the column of compressed air being pushed up the barrel that severs the tape, NOT the projectile.
