    Tahr hunting after the culling

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has been hunting up Mt Cook area after the culling? I went to Fred's stream and Bush stream approx 15 months ago and saw good numbers in both. Am hoping to do a trip over the new year period as finally have some time off but just wondering if anyone has been up those ways and if there are still numbers up there?
    Thanks
    Aim small , miss small

For what its worth - I was talking with the Twizel DOC guys in mid November. They reckoned the the highest Tahr numbers were close to the Mt Cook village as the helo cullers were not allowed to operate there due to the potential to upset the loopies. Thney were happy for foot shooters to go where-ever permits would allow (so the streams immediately adjacent to the village). Give them a ring, have a chat, treat them decently and they will help you out to the best of their ability. They told me that the control of the cull operation taken out of their hands and that it was run from Wellington - great

You can also get an idea of things by looking at the DOC cull maps on their website.

    Hey mate,

I did a winter trip up the dobson, which backs onto both the bush and Fred's streams. The trip was following a cull of approx 2500 nannies from the valley.

If anything the hunting was better. Numbers were lower for sure, but every time we came across a mob of nannies we were pretty certain there would be a mature bull close by.

Based on that experience I wouldn't hesitate to head up bush or Fred's, though they have culled more animals since. Hopefully they were still selectively taking nannies.
