Who do we need to lobby to get the 1993 Himalayan tahr control plan changed, things have changed in the last 27 years we need to embrace the fact tahr can be a huge part of tourism $ in this country. I’m not trying to save them all maybe 35000 is to high but 10000 is to low. 25000 could be a good number of which maybe 5-8000 could be allowed to live in national parks. There has to be some in between ground for everyone.
They will move highways to protect snails. How about we have a little compassion for the majestic tahr?

there's been vast quantities of high country grazing retired through this time frame, this FACT is ignored by Tigg N Tweet and DOC. I fully agree, there's needs to be a major revision to the plan to take ALL facts into account. Also the method of "counting" Tahr by their own admission has a huge margin of error - cant remember the exact figure, but something like +/- 30% or more

As a foreign hunter who has watched his share of Thar hunting videos I'm amazed again and again how many hunters are dropping multiple average Bulls and letting all nannies walk, not saying everyone but as hunters we must do our part or the anti's who would rather see every Thar exterminated then see one smiling hunter posing with his/her trophy will get their way !!
P.S. I'm still coming over next year so keep up the good fight!!

Quick question: I'm prolly too old to be chasing Tahr around the tops, but what are they like for eating? goat/mutton flavour?

An older bull tahr tastes somewhat like it smells (billy goat) needs plenty of garlic.
Nannies and younger bulls are basically like goat, very good eating. I'll carry out back steaks and back legs.

You're never too old @MarkN but it does get harder... so you just need to get smarter. Smarter usually means more money but don't be put off by those hunting programs on TV which show the team on monumental missions in gruelling conditions. You have to go prepared but you don't need to go stupid. You can shoot yourself a nice eating nanny down lown in Spring.

The meat is quite coarse in its fibres, a bit like goat, dark in colour and I find it has a very slight musky background flavour to it. It doesn't taste anything like goat to me which is good because I can't stand goat meat. Its typical of most of our game meats I guess, not too different to chamois or a whitetail.

I guess it'll be the walk down from Auckland, that'll test me, and the swim across to the mainland.

I have to say a tahr nanny or young animal taste more like veni. Yes older bulls not the choice for eating though. I rate tahr well above goat for eating qualities. I have two tahr roasts in my freezer - young animals. Agree that more nannies need to be shot but some of us only get out a few times to fill the freezer - in the spring. Working on getting more all going well?

Complain to your local MP fellas.

I have written to mine (Labour) telling him that if this goes ahead he will lose my vote. His office has told me that this is nothing to do with him and that my email has been passed to Sage. Of course, we already know what that individual thinks, and luckily she will soon be the ex-minister. I have written back to ask what my MP thinks, that I want him to represent my views to his party, and to ask how important my vote is to him.

It’s all they care about, so write to the buggers and make them think.
