    Tahr Newbie Question?

Hi Guys. Im after alittle advice on hunting Thar around early November. Would it be a good time to hunt them around the Godley/Dobson area. I dont have alot of experience hunting in snow etc. Would that be a could time to get the animals down low and would there be great risk with Avalanche's etc this time of year?
Id rather ask the question than take the risk. Cheers for any help.
    Regards
    Steven

Yep, good time to hunt tahr, bulls mobbed up and down low. Was in Tekapo area last week and saw bulls down around 950m asl. Avalanche danger will be dependant on snow load. Warm ground and fresh snow can be unstable...

Haven't hunted the Godley but the Dobson is usually good. Depending on how far up you go you might have to be weary of avalanches but I'm sure common sense will prevail. This was in the middle of winter opposite the reardon hut:Name: AV.jpg

Thanks guys Im looking at putting it back to Mid December to avoid some of the snow. Any help with a place to start would be very helpful.Ive checked the Doc website but if there is a place that doesnt get too much traffic that time of year I would be rather spend another day walking to get there. I have 5 days to try secure my first tahr .
    Cheers again.

You should be fine in November. Any time after Labour weekend is a good time. Avalanches should only be a problem if there is a big fresh dump of snow in the last couple of days. If you don't have a 4WD then Mt Cook is a good place to go. I have seen Tahr from the road that goes up the Tasman Valley towards the terminal lake.

nov will be a good time as they will be bleach blond and stick out like dogs balls.

take a good set of binos if you can beg borrow or steal them

they walk down hill in the evenings and up in the mornings. work the wind and remember they have amazing eye sight

learn the difference in POI between shooting up/down hill and on the flat. acually read up on it tho, otherwise you will miss animals.

dead jealous I friken love tahr huntin,

Sometimes you are better looking in the country that everyone else drives/walks past to get away into the headwaters... Hate to think how many good animals I have been past in the quest to get away from where everyone else goes...
