Oamaru? Cool peace of country, definately a few deer about, easy (but farking boring) 3-4 hour walk. Its dead flat. Usually see a few deer on the walk through poronui (can't hunt in poronui part of track, private land), which is pretty cool.

The hut is sweet but there are plenty of good camp sites by the river either way if you fancy fly camping.

walk up the waipakihi river from waipakihi rd end off the desert rd,you can camp at the road end and hunt from there or walk in a ways and fly camp, nice river, good hunting.

Or go via urchin track, but 5 h of tramping. The view on the top is well worth it. There is usually a falcon hanging around. But down the waipakihi it is sika country, not the easiest deer to chase around.
