Taking the Mrs Bush

So the Mrs and I are heading bush next week. We will leave Auckland on Monday morning and need to be in Masterton by Mid afternoon on Thursday.

We are set up for fly camping and happy for a reasonable walk in (within reason as I will be carrying a fair bit). She will hang out around camp, read her book, sunbathe and dangle her toes in the stream (if there is a stream). I would like a reasonable chance at putting up a deer, not expecting miracles as I still haven't shot one on public land.

Given the timings, two to three nights somewhere in the North Island, where would you guys go? Key attractions would include: Picturesque scenery, a bit of privacy, decent camp site, reasonable deer numbers, not too difficult to get to (six hours of straight up hill would make her sad).

Thoughts so far include Jap creek or Kiko Rd in the Kaimanawas. Could be keen to have a look in the Tararuas or Ruahines but don't know anywhere that fits the bill - Would it be worth giving the local DOC office a bell?
Not after anyones secret pozzie but a general hint or a well known spot would be choice.

you can glamp it at the bottom ones or fly camp up the top ones, or fly camp between them.

may be a bit busy??

Most huts in the Ruahines on the bay side fit what your after.

The area fills with foreigners, over 100 vehicles.

3 hours easy walk from the road end.

Hot pools to relax in.

Swedish and German Girls to perv at errr converse with. ;)

Mohaka river to swim in .............. and fish in so don't forget the rod and reel :)

Head upstream from the camp site pick a side creek and your hunting.

And if the weather turns to shit your only about 30mins from Te Puia Lodge

You got it all wrong, don't encourage women folk to go bush, it's a place for blokes & there mates to get away from the missus, kids & work. Take her somewhere where it's an unpleasant experience so she won't want to go again :D:D

Anyone mention Snee Rd:D

Oamaru? Cool peace of country, definately a few deer about, easy (but farking boring) 3-4 hour walk. Its dead flat. Usually see a few deer on the walk through poronui (can't hunt in poronui part of track, private land), which is pretty cool.

The hut is sweet but there are plenty of good camp sites by the river either way if you fancy fly camping.

walk up the waipakihi river from waipakihi rd end off the desert rd,you can camp at the road end and hunt from there or walk in a ways and fly camp, nice river, good hunting.

Or go via urchin track, but 5 h of tramping. The view on the top is well worth it. There is usually a falcon hanging around. But down the waipakihi it is sika country, not the easiest deer to chase around.

If the weather is real nice you can camp at the top of the Umukarkari track (next to the Urchin on Kaimanawa Rd). Water is down the hill in a creek but not far. There are several tent sites. Lends itself to you sitting nearby or even at the campsite and glassing for deer. A few trampers come up to go to Waipakihi Hut but the track doesn't go right past the campsite so its nice and private. It's about 2-3 hr up an OK bush track.

You'll see other hunters in the Waipakihi valley so she might not be so happy on her own all day. Beautiful camping though. Only go if the river is < 5-6 cumecs (google for tongariro river level genesis). Technical bush hunting for sika.

On the Eastern Ruahines, see if the road is open again to the Sunrise Hut. It's 2-3 hr walk up a well benched track. A bit of a grunt but not that long in the end. The hut is big, nice, has fantastic view. Usually there will be lots of other people there, nice tramper types and families so if she's social it can be a good place to read and spend the day.

For lesss good weather in the eastern Ruahines maybe Stanfields Hut, which is nice, 6 bunk in valley floor. Go in via the high track, climbs up 200m then sidles all the rest to the hut. Not quite so easy to get onto a deer there but some around. PM me if you want suggestions for how to hunt those spots.

There you go thats some of my second best spots.

Dorkus...'er Indoors has been with me to camp at Army Road ..Kaimanawas...or my favourite Clemnents Mill Road...she's got walking...reading...sunburning...talking to other people....good fireplaces...decent long drops...and if the beer gets warm it is only 45 minutes to Taupo....!!!!

I have been going bush for over 35 years and I reckon I could count on one hand, how many times I have bumped into other people.

God I love the wet coast.
May the sandflies get bigger and notorious weather continue😆

Yeah its scary to think its been that long as time has flown. Hope i can last as long again going bush. Good thing about the coast is, geographically it is easier to know if someone is in your intended area. Also people walk past half the good hunting thinking its better somewhere else:thumbsup:

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I ended up taking her into Totara Flats in the Tararuas. She's not all that stoked coz we walked in last night and I shot a deer this morning so had to walk out again.
I'll post a report and some pics when i can be bothered.

Nice apartments at mount Maunganui, hot pools across the road, good takeaways, beach isn't bad and you can climb the mount, what else could you want, apart from a deer?
