I did a white tail skin 25 odd years ago with a leidrieters kit. It came out pretty good. I haven't seen them for a while but I think they changed there name.
Its a copper based formula I think. Maybe copper sulphate?
Think you can still buy the Leidretters kit or similar from H and F. Decided to get my big bull skin done by O'Rourkes in Pleasant Point.
Still looks awesome 4 years on so worth considering.
If you get stuck, try the tannery in Leeston.
Just did a fallow skin with a ledders kit, about $70 online. Came out mint.
However just sent a tahr skin to animal tanning services in invercargil. Price is very sharp when you consider the cost of the ledders kits ( would probably need 2x kits for a bull tahr) and your time. He gets very good reviews for the quality of his work.
Turners tannery in Leeston do such a good job for a decent price it's almost not worth the hassle. Baking soda and kerosene is the old school way of doing it though, cheap and comes out alright

$380 from memory, theres a lot of work involved in tanning a bull tahr as their hides are so thick. Generally takes 4-6 months depending on how much sun he gets so they can cure, plenty of time to save up if need be, but it comes out perfect compared to trying it on your own
My white tail was ok but only a little skin. I hear you about the drying part. I lived on the west coast and it was a bit of an act getting enough sun to dry it out after the pickling.
