Hey guys,
Was going to take a walk up to Totara flats this weekend. Plan was to park on Waiohine Gorge Road and walk up.
Any advice? Anyone been in there lately?
Regards,
Seth.

Take waders and a machete
Been a lot of rain in the last week. You'll probably end up on the wet weather detour, there is a fair amount of supple jack and vines around and above the big slip.
Also phone DOC, waiohine road had a major slip couple of months ago.
Mangatarere to Sayers might be a bit easier going based on the river flows at the moment ? Local DOC ranger should know.

Was up that wa a couple of weeks ago, Car park now 15 minute walk from old one due to slip, Yes i would suggest waders be a good choice. Good luck
Fark haven't been there for 40 years! But put up two Hines on the walking track just by the big Rimu on the left!
Boom, cough,cough,cough
Waiohine River at Gorge » Greater Wellington Regional Council
These are the river level gauges - there are 3 new bridges in crossing the side tributaries so it's an easy walk to Totara Flats
Road to the carpark is washed out about 600m before the end so ya park at the bus turning area and walk in - no biggie.
Used to go in there about 10-12yrs ago and you could get good numbers on the flats coming up to dawn/dusk although have been there a couple of times since and the deer numbers seemed much less, 1080 maybe??? There are from memory two or three side creeks to cross maybe 2-3hrs in that can come up quite fast if it rains as can the main river which you follow for the last hour-ish. If the main river comes up then there's a wet weather alternate route along the tops which really really sucks and only done that once. Unless there's a new version of maps out the marking of totara flats hut on the map is about half an hour or so early (old one removed and new flash one put further north). Also they have removed the LPG gas from totara flats hut as dick heads kept abusing/wasting the gas. According to my old hunting spots book there is some ok bush stalking next to the flats but I mostly hunted the flats themselves and the ground was quite swampy from memory. Have fun and good luck!

Go give it a shot mate, you will best know when you do get on the tracks.. Going throught Waiohine track if you are unable to get through to Totara flats detour to other hutts available around there (Cone, Tutuwai) are prity close from there to keep the fun going.
Had seen a lot of signs around this place so still a better go at hunting than pulling the pin..
Good luck..
Gibo been up the Wiao hine gorge more than once!
