Thread: Taumarunui

Im fairly new to hunting (5-6 years) and spend a few weeks in Taumarunui each year hunting on private land for reds. Well this week was just one of those weeks on the calender and with high hopes set off for a weeks hunting. On arrival the land owner told us his son had bagged himself a 16 pointer a week before with a impressive head. So within the first hour of hunting I came across a deer arse on to me. Raised the rifle and waited for a side on shot which came after a minute or so. Deer hits the deck, beauty! Unfortunately it was a very young stag which I should have left (still learning), but after having the back steaks later in the week my attitude has changed somewhat to suite the taste buds.

Three other hunters in my cabin over the week manged a few deer each consisting of a young stag, several hinds, and a fawn. Highlights for me were watching two hinds feeding on a face and settling down to relax in the afternoon sun. A 10 pointer was spotted by a experienced hunter and a bullet sent on its way to only not connect (rare for this hunter) with its intended target. In his frustration he took a shot and missed a hind (very rare). Some stick was given over the camp fire that evening but he finally redeemed himself on the last day with a hind.
