Taupo/Ruapehu hunting

Hiya,

Meant to be taking the family to the snow this week and it's looking not looking good for snow levels. Any recommendations for taking an 11yr old for a walk?
Keen to look for anything, especially rabbits as it'll give them the chance to have a shoot.

But also open to some other options either with my 11yr old or myself.

I was in at the Waihohonu hut in the weekend. Not much chance of shooting something (about two-thirds of the walk is on private land), but the track is pretty good and can do the return trip in a day easily.
