Haven't tried personally but believe the farmer does not allow dog access.

He doesn't and wouldn't want to get caught. Seemed like an angry bugger last time I was up there

Richard is a nice guy. He's had plenty of shit heads using the legal access over the years.

I'd get pretty sick of people driving up to the bush edge and camping on your land, spotlighting etc.

As for dogs I'd politely ask his wife or him if you could get permission before doing so. One of the rules doc agreed to for paper road was no dogs.

Otherwise get a quiet fox terrier and carry it in your pack lol

Is the access an easement over private land or an unformed public road, or a marginal strip beside a water way ?? Have a look on the WAMs website, put your cursor on the access and left click. The information will appear in a box if it is crown land. Unformed and formed public roads show as purple lines. These roads can be used by the public at anytime.

Are you allowed to get dropped off at the bushline? I know you not allowed to park there

You would be battling to drive to the start of the track that's for sure. The last section is quite muddy

Just looked on WAMs. Te Tuhi road is a legal but unformed road meaning that you can take your dog on the road. The legal road does not follow the farm track but winds all over, so a mapping app would be needed to keep to the road. Step off the road and you are trespassing on private land.

I would write to the farmer, tell him who you are, that you are writing to seek permission to cross his land, name a couple of local referees who can vouch for you and say that you will phone in a couple of weeks to speak with him. You can tell him that you are aware of the legal road, but would prefer to have his agreement.

Moa Hunter brings out a very valid point: Unformed Legal Roads (paper roads) are well identified on the WAMS website. An absolutely brilliant website paid for by your and mine tax dollars. Be polite but firm, if you have a good GPS loaded with the correct data you can walk/drive the unformed legal road any time of the day or night. But take one step off the (generally 20m) wide road and you will be trespassing. But on it, you are on a public road, not 'his' farmland. All that free grass that grows on that 'road', that his stock graze, is not calculated as his farm area, and he/she does not pay rates on it.

But its far better all round if you can cross said farmland with his acknowledgement.
Shitheads can stuff up access for all of us, but in the case of ULR's, a road is a road. Public land.
Farmers (well, any who do due dilligence when looking at purchasing a property) know this. Modern tech now makes it a whole lot easier for those keen types who wish to, to traverse these unformed legal roads

Was up there last week and if I recall the DOC sign said gun and dog by permit only. Cant imagine you'll get a vehicle to the bush edge owing to the terrain and fences. No deer though, stay home

You cant get a vehicle past the carpark without permission. There is a phone number on one of the gates for the farmer. I have talked to him before and have taken my dog across under his conditions. Wouldnt try without permission because there are eyes everywhere I had 3 separate people hit me up while taking my dog across

thanks for that everybdy. i dont like to smart ass my way and do the paper road thing, id rather just go somewhere else.
i'm living near raglan now so cant be bothered going up and calling to ask i like to just go when i go and not have to worry about anybody elses twisted knickers.

looks like wairere falls should be able to be accessed with a dog.. is that where dog people go in/
