Technology- Where are we heading

I have had a few recent mates back in the UK messing about with drones and it got me thinking. Just so you know drones are kind of like helicopters which sometimes have cameras attached that can stream a live feed to a computer.

Would it be possible to use as a hunting tool?
Ethics don't come in to it so lets keep it on the level. Could a drone be used for spotting animals, lets face it the animals would not know what it was about and is there any worth in using a drone to cover the footwork so you don't have to.
Just curious where the future and tech is headed.

Put a heat seeking camera on your drone and you are sorted! The technology is there.
But what is the point? You may as well shoot a deer with a rope around its neck in a paddock or behind a fence if EASY is what you are after.

Doing the hard yakka is what give the animal we hunt so much more " value".

Interesting. BUT. My understanding is that current nz law only allows these things to be used in a line of sight type of way.
Open areas my be ok, but typical bush country means your chopper ain't going very far, so what's the point. It would also just be yet another thing to carry

I agree 100% friwi, it's not all about the kill the outdoors and the thrill of the chase is all there for proper hunting.
How many times though have hunters been out and thought you know what it would be nice to have a 500metre walk, bang flop and away home we are.
I know personally there are days that is met in my camp with major approval, then there are the days i like putting the hard yards in. @TeRei, not watched any of their material, I have a computer that could run NASA but I have poor mans tv. I am ashamed:oh noes:

Some of them can fly 2km away easy, I met some guys this roar who were using one to fly the bush edges looking for stags.

My hunting spot though you could park up, get the quad copter out and move that bugger at up to 60mph or kph I forget and figure if you go right or left.
Get's me thinking.

Fat Boy was one of the small nuclear bombs dropped on Japan WW2 thought it would flatten the hills for an easy retrieve?

I remember similar debates about fish finders a few years ago!

I think they use them now - real big drones, that you can shoot out of - called choppers!

A 10/22 mounted directly down would be good for nailing rabbits in vinyards.

PB Tech in Hamilton had a sale on them last week. Had some of the bigger ones up to about 7k I think.

Animals adapt... Know of a farm that backed on to a 1080'd block no would go near it for 6 months + ...they have shot 50 + foot longs to 30 lbs in the last three months started sneaking in on dusk , then spot lighting , now infer red ...now the pigs know the red light means danger ...paddocks are upside down.. Animals adapt

We have long Rangers , bow hunters , bush stalkers ,tops hunters, infer red hunters, behind the fence and chopper hunters..... We also have head hunters ,meat hunters , weekend hunters and only roar hunters.

Now we have drone hunters ... and as we know you can glass face / slip for hours and suddenly the animal is there. Luck to em are they going to slog onto your favourite spot and then fly a drone ...probs not ... Fly/ drive into a block and use a drone to find and animal ..perhaps but we are already using spotting scopes electronic ,roaring horns scent cover ... You still have to haul your arse up there and a lot can happen from seeing and shooting.

Do I care ...not a great deal! Same with Pig hunting / dog chasing with gps dogs ..head around the road cut off the pig or set a fresh dog on it or ....get to your dogs faster know where they are .. Less worry ( stock damage) .. Less damage to the pig and dogs..

Life is about change ..the only thing that has not changed is you have to get your arse out on the hill.

Nothing wrong with drones, they seem like a very good challenge......................................... .......................... to hit with a 12g. I would imagine they would show up errors in technique faster than shooting sporting clays since clays can only go in one direction and thats not backwards

lots of things can affect them .
bloody expensive to buy a decent one .
need a special license to operate .
wind can affect them in a big way.
Mate who works with us in the mines has a couple of flash ones.
he has invested a lot of coin into it as a photography business and has spent a lot of time and money to get license.
You still have to get close enough to shoot and cart gear into the hills chargers and lots of stuff would be needed to run it.
crash it and have to get it back from up a tree on a bluff .
cant see it being a real issue or do any damage.

Whenever there is a significant change that can change hunting (or any other "manly" sport) someone will pipe in that it is cheating or steals the spirit of the action. I don't foresee ever using drones but I won't poo poo someone for trying something new. That being said, I am glad for certain innovations in hunting bc I have no interest in jumping from a horse to face and angry boar with a short spear. (The true manly way to hunt pigs).

Drones are quite noisey then again so are choppers and they do alright.
The restrictions would be battery times and charging as already mentioned. Quite a bit of gear to be carting in unless you were to drive to the location

On the 1st of August this year, two laws will change for the use of drone by the CAA and a change to the privacy act.

The CAA change means unrestricted use in uncontrolled airspace to a max celling of 400ft. Flight within restricted airspace will be allowed, but with some restrictions like comms with ATC and filing of flight plans and NOTAM's.

The privacy act change, from how I understand it, will mean that the user must have written consent from ALL land owners that the UAV/Drone flies over, regardless if camera footage is being collected at the time. This is being hotly contested my many parties. Effective it means that is a city councils wants to collect photo data over the city, they will require written consent of all land owners in the city. I guess they would just add a local plan change to get around this.

Overall, the use on Drones in NZ is pretty relaxed at the moment, but as things change, so will the laws around there use. There are a few pilots on here that would agree that alot of the UAV's cannot be seen from an aircraft.
