Don't worry too much about scaring the deer, I saw a guy shoot 2 deer at the bottom of a long clearing while I was observing another 5 deer 100 meters further up it and they never even lifted their heads.

Thanks @Ryan_Songhurst - I might just take you up on that one day (with beers, of course. Can't do crays, but can do whitebait ). Don't think I'll be able to make it up there before my next hunting trip though.

Have a look around there are a couple of other threads on this recently plus one on short range sighting in.

Checking your gun is still sighted in would only take 3 or 6 shots or even 1 and generally be just fine.

Once upon a time I did a sight in session on the open riverbed up the Edwards valley at Arthur's Pass and on the way out shot a big stag near the road where it joins the Mingha. Certainly a couple of km away deer won't be disturbed. This was midweek so no trampers to be disturbed either.

I'd suggest steering clear of spots near private land as farmers will quite rightly be concerned and could be a lot more trouble than DoC or the police.

Just use your discretion obviously. Not in the car park, or on the track. Take a day bag and a packed lunch and wander off by yourself somewhere. It's still a freer country than the UK or the US last I checked.
